Game will not start... period.

Hello guys,

Today I installed Company of heroes with Steam but I was never able to make it work. It would crash to desktop when choosing a mission. Anyways, I decided to play ME2 but it just will not start. The circle thing appears and I can see it in the windows task manager for a few seconds but then it disappears. Every other game runs fine, including L4D2, Divinity 2, America's Army 3 and moonbase alpha which are the only games I currently have installed. I un-installed Company of Heroes but it didn't help anything. I am thinking it might have to do something with that, perhaps a side program it installed like direct x but didn't uninstall. I have done everything I can think of from running the game as administrator to running a registry cleaner. It is odd because I played it yesterday just fine.

Hope someone has ideas.

I am running a GTX 560 Ti with the latest 266.66 drivers on windows 7 64 bit. Again, I can play any other game without issue so I doubt its hardware related.

Yeah, some games do that. I downloaded the Metro 2033 demo from fileplanet, and couldn't even find the .exe to start it. Then I have Red Alert 2 that won't start, Emperor BFD and other stuff that is quite tempremental. Cinebench suddenly no longer worked when I was using Win7 pro 32-bit, but now is okay.

Hunt around your files for the .exe

try deleting "ClientRegistry.blob" from the steam directory and launch steam again

I have this problem with about a dozen games on steam and this resolves the issue for most of them - if that failes, delete everything in your steam folder except the "steam apps" folder and the steam.exe, once everything has been deleted launch steam from the exe and it will reinstall and reconfigure all of the settings for you

Download and run this to make sure your DX is upto date

http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

Also Open AL

Make sure you have the latest PhysX aswell

If it still does not work try running the .exe in different compatibility modes.

EDIT:Have you restarted your PC since? sometimes when a program closes it does not close properly and might still be running but not working.

Go to

task manager > performance > resource monitor > memory

See if the process is still running.

Just a few suggestions anyway I don't know if any of them will fix your problem.

Yeah I'd try them too.

Back in the good 'ole days, when programming, you were hassled to make sure that if something goes wrong with a program, you would produce something to say so.

Something they really cba with these days.

How about "This game requires the installation of DirectX 9" - which is such a common issue with games (even tho Dx11 is meant to be flavor of the year). Instead of just ctd'ing and leaving the gamer with WTeF! written all over their face.

Hey cheers mate, that fixed it. I have no idea why though.

i used that fix: delete blob file, also i've launched the game from the folder, that booted it then it worked in steam.

1 game uses Windows LIVE and didn't boot and I found its LIVE installer in its folder, ran that then it worked

Also check your settings for ffdshow if none of those fixes work. Some games you need to add game exe's to "don't use FFA list" in audio decoder.
