At least i think it counts as a review, its my first, and was more of a blog post about it on my blog.
anyway Enjoy. please feel free to poke holes in it.
So i went and bought assassins creed brotherhood on saturday, i am a big fan of the series and couldn’t wait to play it. It’s a very good game but i feel that it doesn’t live up to my expectations as much as id hoped. For one thing I dont like the idea of the story taking part in just Rome, i’d rather it had been more like assassins creed 2 with multiple cities.
The size of Rome on the game is big but it isn’t as big as i had expected and i sometimes get bored of having to free run my way across the city just to get to a mission that is easy and takes no more than 5 minutes, and yes i know there are fast travel style tunnel systems, but you still have to travel throughout the city to kill someone to burn down a tower to buy access to each tunnel entrance, which is fun when you have assassins because you can make them do it instead, but i will get to those guys later.
On a brighter note the game is better than a expected in a few ways as well, when the game was first announced we where told that the combat system had been improved, as well as the currency system, and that you could recruit and build your guild of assassins, at first i thought this might ruin the game slightly, making it more complex than it needs to be, which was one of the things putting me off buying the game, i wasn’t sure that i would like it as much as i did the second one, or the first one. Along side most of my friends telling me not to get it because its is a terrible game. Upon playing it i realised that not much had changed really, i prefer the improved combat and am that they finally included the crossbow, and i love it when you get into a kill streak where you just insta kill every enemy in sight. Recruiting the assassins is very useful for when you have at least a dozen enemies chasing you, they can just come in and help, or when they are full, you can arrow storm them, killing everyone around you, which i consider to be fun but way to easy, so i am glad that there is a ‘recharge’ time for it.
On to more about the assassins. In my opinion being able to recruit assassins into you guild and train them is a brilliant addition to the game, however, i have so criticism for it, you can send your assassins on missions to over parts of the world, the harder the mission, the less the odds of success are and the more assassins you have to send to complete the mission. This is good for levelling up your assassins but i would much rather have gone and done those missions myself, maybe it would have added a bit more of a sense of adventure to the game and i would loved to have seen what the guys down at ubisoft would have done to portray London at the time, or Paris, i don’t think i would have been disappointed. When you are completing missions there are some side tasks to achieve 100% synchronisation such as getting your assassins to kill a target, this is very useful however i do feel they could have taken a little bit more time mastering the assassins as there are a few bugs, for example, i targeted a Borgia caption for my assassin to kill, the captain was stood in a corner, and the assassin jumped out of the wall in the corner and killed him. I didn’t know they where that much of a ninja.
I think that this addition to the series has been a very good one, but i still have my doubts, i have always said that nothing will beat the first assassins creed and i will stand by my words, when assassins creed 2 came along i liked it a lot, and i still play it now on my computer, but there’s something just missing from the two latest ones that the first one had and did perfectly in my opinion, the massive countryside, in AC when you left a city you could either fast travel to the next city or you could make your own way there exploring the massive countryside along the way, this countryside had a lot of places to explore, towers to climb and small villages, and templar officers to kill as well as hidden flags to find just like in the cities, yes assassins creed 2 had some form of countryside with each city, but its not really much, its just there for show or to satisfy critics such as myself, but with ACB they have removed this factor completely with Rome and just stuck it inside the city walls which is good and looks nice but just isnt the same.
Overall, this is a very good game and i would recommend it to anyone who is into this sort of game, the multi player is fun although i haven’t played it much but it seemed quite easy to level up and it is hard to find enemies which makes it all the better, there are several game modes to choose from and i would personally recommend manhunt, where as others would recommend Wanted. There are a few bugs and glitches that will probably be sorted in future updates but nothing that would really effect the game and how its played. The main storyline of the game seemed slightly disappointing because of its length, it can be completed in about 5-6 hours of none stop playing if you just did it with no side missions, and the achievements are quite easy to get, all are around 20GS each. The HUD is just as simple as it has always been with not much variation from assassins creed 2 with no issues. My only complaint about the HUD would be that there is a white gradient towards the top of the screen in certain environments which can be distracting at times, and makes it hard to play the game in the dark sometimes, however, i have gotten used to it now. I looked on various forums and lots of people have the issue, with ubisoft claiming it doesnt exist, and saying its everyones tvs, which seems to make people not want to play the game and take it back to where they got it from.
Apart from that this is a brilliant game, packed with lots of action as well is some comedy and fun.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this long boring piece, and stay tuned for more on other games and tech.
