G71: Promise and Disappointment

Well, the Inquirer has recently published their opinions of the upcoming G71 chip and looks like it will actually be the GT model that will win out here. The GT looks to have the same, if not more power than current 7800 GTX. Even better this thing looks like it will be very aggressively priced with an estimated MSRP of $299. That means you can save about $150 over the 7800 GTX and still get the same performance! They figure these cards will be highly overclockable due to the 90nm process used to manufacture them.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the GTX model will fare nearly as well. Asian partners have already gotten their hands on pre-production models and they are not impressed. It seems that, in their tests, best case scenario only yielded 8-10% higher performance than the previous Nvidia king, the 7800GTX 512MB. While that seems fairly impressive, it is likely that the X1900 family will still manage to beat it out in most benchmarks. The Asian partners have ordered very limited quantities of these chips compared to what they normally order. Looks like the main saving grace of these chips are that they are going into the upcoming Sony PS3.
