G70 Ultra Cancelled

It seems nvidia don't want to hurt sales of the GT and GTX by releasing another card that performs above them: according to The Inquirer

Business wise it's better to ship many GTX and GTs and sell them in quantities than to release a limited but faster Ultra. We learned that Nvidia shipped a few tens of thousands of GTX and GTs already and it has been shipping in numbers ever since. Last thing you want is to upset people with releasing Ultra, a card that would be marginally faster than G70 and likely to create more problems than solve them.

Well makes sense I spose. Hopefully it will mean nvidia can keep pushing prices for the 7800GTx down so I can get one in SLi :D

n that light a very limited but available R520XT might be a Yule winner and best performer and Geforce 7800 GTX is here to stay. At some point Nvidia has to update it to a 512MB memory version but that’s about it. The key problem for ATI is that it cannot ship a few tens of thousands of those units until December, no chance at all, and Nvidia can reach and beat those volumes with its highly available GTX part.

So yes - 512mb aside: the 7800GTX will remain top dawg :D

Definitely makes business sense, to hold off, plus keep the customers happy who have just forked out huge bucks for a 7800GTX. Of course it all comes down to the validity of the source (Inquirer that is, not you kemp lol) :D

I still think we'll see the Ultra hit shelves if ATi decides to step up with a card that outperforms the GTX.

That's why nVidia's holding off!! They got backup if they need to release another card, but they feel as of now, no use for it. :)
