G3258 Project.

Hi all,
As the title says this project is about the G3258. The reason I am doing this is mainly because my overclocking knowledge is very limited and I would like to have some practice in the dark arts of overclocking .

Ok my parts list I have come up with is as follows :-

Case - Fractal Design R5 Titanium
Motherboard - Asus Z97 Pro Gamer
PSU - SuperFlower Leadex Gold 650W
CPU - Intel G3258 Pentium Anniversary - Purchased
GPU - BFG GTX 280 OC - Lying Around From An Old Build
Memory - Avexir 8GB ( 2x4GB ) DDR3 1600Mhz ( Red LED ) - Purchased
Cooler - Unsure yet, Open to suggestions, Budget Max for an Air Cooler = £60, May decide on an AIO
HDD - WD 2TB Green

UPDATE!!!

Ok guys I've been reviewing my parts list and I have been having a few doubts. The main issue I have at the moment is space and this is having a an effect on the current list.

The solution that I have come up with is to go mATX as it will fit in nicely with my current setup. I have always fancied a Corsair Air 240, I watched Tom's review and was very impressed so purchasing one of these is very likely.

In the previous list the Asus Z97 Pro Gamer was listed, as this is an ATX board this unfortunately is no longer an option so an alternative I have come up with is an Asus Z97M-PLUS. I will be completely honest Im not too fussed on the Gold Accents especially considering I have Avexir Red LED RAM but if Tony Stark can pull off Red and Gold I cant see why I cant .

Has anyone had any experience with this board? Especially where Overclocking is concerned? Since it's Asus I cant see that overclocking will be a concern. As always any feedback is welcome.

UPDATE!!!

Ok I went ahead with the mATX idea and my received my parts today. The original list has now changed a fair bit so here's how things are looking now.

PSU - SuperFlower 550W Golden Green - Purchased

Memory - Avexir 8GB ( 2x4GB ) DDR3 1600Mhz ( Red LED ) - Purchased
Cooler -Phantex TC14CS - Purchased
HDD - Kingston HyperX 120GB - Purchased

As said previously the main reason for the change is down to the space I have available. But from what I can see things should look pretty good. However, the Phantex I ordered was originally a Black Heatsink, the one I received was a Silver one with White Fans. At first I was a bit disappointed and was going to arrange for a replacement but the more I think about it I think it could work well.

Plus, I had a nice little freebie Wireless Card thrown in with my order, I dont really need it but not bad for free

UPDATE!!!

Well long story short she is built I will try to cut it down as much as I can.......

Started building all was going well until I started fitting the Phanteks cooler, as I was building I thought "This is higher than I thought it would be but carried on with it, all was fitted until I went to put the side cover on and well as you can probably imagine the side panel wouldn't go on :huh:.....Bugger

So thinking about my next move I thought let's go down the AIO route so I purchased a H100i and 4 SP120 fans for push pulll. Proceeded to fit that and noticed that the backplate was a bit loose and it didn't feel right to carry on fitting it, Googled it and it seems to be a common problem, some people were saying to fit washers others said to fit it and it will all tighten up.

Went to B&Q the next day and picked up a set of rubber washers and it fitted nicely, only small issue is now as the backplate sits a bit further away from the board its pushing the HDD cage out, no big deal really as Im running an SSD.

Here is revised list of what is in the system now....

Fans - Corsair SP120 x4 Push Pull Config @ 12v AF120 x1 @7v - Purchased
LED's - Bitfenix 30cm x 1, Bitfenix 12cm x 1 - Purchased


In the end it's all working, I was just about to post a pic and my phone battery died and I have work in the morning so better get to bed.

Overall Im a bit gutted about the Phanteks but not a total loss as it's being placed into another system. Next is to Overclock, wish me luck!!!

It was released as the 20th Anniversary celebration of the original Pentiums, only a pokey little 3.2Ghz Dual Core for £50 but damn you can OC the nuts off it with very little effort and the gains are huge, for instance I smashed 4.6Ghz in a matter of minutes with a simple tweak of the multiplier and tickled the voltage very slightly.. I didn't go any higher than that, mine's heading back to TTL and he'll hopefully show us all how it's really done.. I had a really good chip 4.6Ghz @ 1.25v with loads of room left for improvement, and it's a Haswell.

It's a cracking budget builders option for gaming.

Looks like it will be a sweet build, I was about to say for a cooler then I would go with a Dark Rock 3 or even the Dark Rock PRO 3 just for the damn sexy looks....!

Cheers Wraith yeah I haven't forgotten, I will let you know when it's stable. I had a little dabble with the overclocking last night started with 4.2 Ghz on stock voltage ran OCCT it seemed ok then put it on a 45 multiplier at stock voltage (feeling ambitious) and it blue screened, So will have to play with the voltages a bit. Out of curiosity how long should I pressure test before it lools like all is stable?

May I ask what temps you were getting? With the H100i I presume?

Idle 20c, 100% Load 45c, over the last couple of months idle has seen 16c , and yes H100i doing a top job.

EDIT: @JLR I'd stress it for an hour just so you know it's had a good run in, and keep an eye on those temps.

Cheers Wraith will do. Im using about 60°C as a marker. I know the CPU can take more but starting off safely.
