According to INQ, the FX-60 based on 90nm Toledo core will be launch on January 10th the FX-60 clocked at 2.6GHz (13.0 x 200MHz), Dual Core, 2 x 1MB L2 cache, 1.35V VCore and JH-E6 stepping. It will be the last Socket 939 processor of the Athlon 64 FX family where the its successor will be the FX-62 which is Socket M2 based and support Dual Channel DDR2 667. Athlon X2 and FX-60 share similarities since both are dual-core and are based on Toledo core where FX-60 is a essentially a "higher clocked" version of the current X2 4800+ at 2.4GHz. The next X2 in the line will be based on the "Windsor" core and Socket M2 based and will start appearing in Q2 2006. The Athlon 64 X2 5000+ will be clocked at 2.667GHz (8.0 x 333.3MHz) and contains 2 x 1MB L2.

Thanks for the info mate! Do you know what else will be different about the windsor core apart from being based on M2 and using DDR2? Are AMD scrapping single core completly for the high end user? Any ETA on M2 and these windsor cores? Will you be getting an FX60? :D

jeez, £750 is expensive isn't it!? Any reason they didn't call it the FX61?

Same price and Fx57 now Nick mate.

They called it FX60 so it was two numbers behind it's skt M2 counterpart (which will be FX62) and avoid confusion 8) .

:D

With M2 (is that the 940-pin M", or the full 1207-pin M2?) fairly close to the release of the FX60...I`m really not sure what to look forward to in terms of buying. Fair enough, I never buy the top of the range anyway... but it seems like AMD are just squeezing for more money.

Also good to see AMD starting with really random clock speeds coz of the new RAM frequencies LOL

Last "point"... most ppl are clocking their X2s higher on air/water than the FX60 is anyway, so its not really a great investment IMHO. The only guarantee is of the best memory controllers, and an unlocked multi, and guys like Mav already have a pretty sweet spot at 260-ishx12

plus it a new mobo combination due to extra pins new mobos takes ages to get the firmware and bioses sorted so, id say unless u gotta have top every thing id persoanlly say sit back clock yr x2 a little more and see how they turn out

I thought the M2 is the 1200+ pin unit but turns out thats skt F and it is a 940 pin upgrade - not backwards compatable with previous 940 pin CPU's though :(.

3Ghz on air on dual core - 'should' result in 3.2 on water or 3.5 on phase.

Wuhooo!

Agreed - I am not in any rush to jump to this new design - the same way I waited for skt754 to be moved sideways and for skt939 to mature before I changed to A64. First releases of new sockets are dogged with performance issues, bugs and overclocking restrictions that really do not suit my needs.

History dictates this and it's likely to be no different this time round.

Of course the minute this statement is proven to be totally wrong I'll be jumpin is ASAP :D

The new socket M2 will be supported with DDR2 memory which we all know run loose timings so do not expect performance gains over the current cpu's.

Hopefully i'm wrong we will have to wait until Febuary!!

Thats partly true - but is you purchase the highest FSB stuff out there you can run lower FSB and really tighten those timings up nicely (on the current Intel boards anyway) and DDR2 has been out a while now and the technology has matured well.

There will be a certain point where high FSB with looser timings will not be an advantage - the trick will be finding the 'sweet spot' between FSB and timings when it comes out.

Well hopefully they will skip DDR2 all together and use DDR3 instead.

Will be interesting non the less.

I think it was considered but shelved, but maybe 2nd generation M2 boards will have DDR3?
