frustrated

I am getting frustrated with folding. Either V7 client dies or my win7 machine reboots. This is becoming more of a burden then I wish to experience. I am on the fence if I want to keep folding or stop. I might try Linux and see if I have better luck with that. The V7 client I can get to run for about 2 days straight and then I get into a cycle were it crashes and won't run more then 7 hours. Most of the time it crashes after I leave for work so for 8 hours the machine does nothing. Very frustrating. I was thinking about getting another video card but now, I am not sure what I am going to do.

I had an old Dell Machine with an AMD X2 2 core 2.8 Ghz CPU. But the points for it really sucked and it was so noisy that I had to turn it off because it was just a waste of energy.

We will see how things go. I am kind of in the F*** the world type mood these days.

Trust me, we've all gone through it. Folding can be a love/hate relationship sometimes for sure. All you can do is try to find the problem. Are you running anything overclocked? If so, drop to stock and see if you still get the crashes. If you do, then it's a driver/OS issue. If not, then gradually start to clock until you get instability, then back it off a bit.

Folding is harder on systems than most other programs. Sometimes it's hard to find the happy medium of speed vs stability. I do think it's worth it in the end though, but it shouldn't be a surprise at all that we have a sticky "Those annoying F@H ..."

what are your temps? is your cpu or gpu overheating? the reason i ask this now, is because i have a lot of friends running the athlon X2 cpu's still and they are all getting the same problems latly, and every one i have checked so far, the heat sink on the cpu is just blocked with dust.....happens after a few years, and it has been a few years since the X2 was released.....

My CPU temps are under 60c which I think that I am good there. I only have a slight overclock now. I don't know how to log GPU temps so when it crashes I don't know what the last temps were. When I looked at the temps while it was folding it did not seem to be unreasonable. I don't remember what the temps were. What program would you recommend in monitoring and logging GPU temps?

I am guessing that maybe the memory did not like the overclock. Just a guess so by me dialing it back a little maybe that will help.

i use MSI afterburner to monitor all things GPU related lol, try bringing your ram clocks back to normal...ram i find to be kinda funky overclocking sometimes....

i use the evga precision software to monitor the gpu temps...
in the last couple of days my second core of my gtx295 keeps crashing:(

Does the PC restart, or does it BSOD, or freeze up, or what?
I hate to ask this, as it just seems silly, but by any chance do you have the 'bubbles' screen saver set?

the load just goes to 0 and stays there. when i restart the wu it soon goes to 0 again... it doesnt freeze or anything
and i havent got the bubbles screensaver set.

for now i just use the first core and it works fine!

No screen saver set. It just reboots and it is back at the login screen. When I log back into Windows it tells me that there was a error and if I want it to check for an answer. It never find anythings. Very strange. Maybe this weekend I will get linux installed and see if it still reboots.

I might try to put it back to stock speed and see what happens.

What happens when one of the cores crash? I am trying to figure out why mine just reboots. The event log does not show anything.

I scaled down my OC. It is a first gen i5 with a stock speed of 2.8 and I have it OC to 3.2 and it has been running for 2 days without any issues. I might try to bump up the speed a little bit to see if it runs ok. Once I find my limit, I will post what I have set and hopefully someone can give me some pointers on how to make it faster. I am sure there is something that I am not doing right.

Matt

No crashes for 4 days in a row a new records. :)

I think that I am not going to try and push the OC any more and just leave it where it is.
