If you're cheap like me when it comes to software and don't like to spend money on it, here are some great anti-virus alternatives that are 100% free.

Avast! Anti-Virus - This program is really slick, it's what I use on all of my computers. It's a very thorough scanner and updates it's virus definitions online almost daily.

AVG Free Edition - This is also another pretty good free anti-virus program for Windows, but IMO, nothing is better than Avast! in the free department :)

BitDefender - Freeware virus scanners for Linux, MS Dos, Palm, Windows CE, ICQ, and Messenger.

Anti-vir - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.

There are a few more online based scanners but they dont get the job done like the ones listed above do... If you're having trouble with that pirated copy of Norton Anti-Virus then check out one of these programs, you might find you like one better!

Yep I'm in agreement with XMS....NOD32 rocks. Its the best AV I have ever used, its resource footprint is minimal and its lightning fast when scanning (although the odd occasional false positives). Its real time monitor has saved me heaps...visiting certain naked ladies sites, and whammo off it goes if there is any dodgy code hidden in the web page!!! Although its not free, it does have a 30 day trial available.

Yep, i'd have to say that its one of the only programs i've ever considered worth paying for.

It doesnt seem to affect performance at all!

Is it crackable? :) I'm cheap, I don't like paying for software....

When you say the resource foot print is minimal, how minimal is that??? lol. I've never been able to find an AV program that doesn't let me know that it's constantly working in the background with some mad slowdowns, especially with the mouse for some reason, I dunno why that happens. When I have my AV program running and I start surfing the web and what not, when i hover my mouse over large linked images it skips or "lags" across them, it's so strange and sooooo fucking annoying.

Couldn't say, coz we don't discuss that kinda stuff here ;)

Not sure of actualy resources used, but its a patheticaly small amount. I've never noticed any slowdowns when using it, and it only pops up when there is a virus or it has updated the engine (configurable).

Nice I'll have to check it out.

NOD32 is the best Anti - Virus out there. Norton is crap and Mcafee is load of :jerkit: . The only problem with NOD32 is when its tries to update via the many servers it connects to the server times out or cannot connect. I think that this maybe my end but it does happen every so often.

Apart from that its gr8 and its cheap as well. :)

How much is it, and is it a one time fee or is it subscription based?

Been using Avast! for about 3 years now. Brilliant piece of software - totally free. Automatic updates. Real-time scanning of websites, p2p, instant messaging.

No need mate... I've been using Nod since about 2 days after that post (which was back in march, hehe) :)

Thx though!
