So is malware bytes a real time protection?

Not in the free version. You'd want to use AV real-time protection for everyday use though. It only takes a google image link to take you to a compromised site when researching various things. It's happened numerous times to me when researching during my degree.

I have always used nod32 not a free AV but never had any problems with it, I will download malware-bytes every so often just to double check but those are the only 2 I use

I just tried 3 times to install the trial for Bit-defender Total security and it wont go pas the extraction files bit. I have restarted my PC and still nothing.

My OS: Windows 10 Technical Preview.

I always found antivirus to be a system hogger and hinder performance so gave up using it years ago and just stuck with windows built in stuff.

Ive never had any issues but has this improved now, I might consider using antivirus if it meant not taking a performance hit

Yeah. Kaspersky was great for me in this regard.

You can't blame Bitdefender then considering hardly anything works for Windows 10.

Yeah, most things won't work for Technical preview...

unless you run a company/business, just use MSE and don't be nigerian stupid.

I used to use MSE and to a degree i agree with what you say but i've read a lot of stuff about MSE not being up to par.I use AVG at the moment

I am using Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy.

I don't use torrents and I don't install codecs or download managers except the K-Lite Codec Pack and Downthemall on Firefox, the sites that I go to never really have anything on them that is infected, and I don't use pirated software either.

As long as you are safe in your browsing and are careful with what your downloading and where your getting, it all from then you shouldn't need to be paying for stuff but if you want to be safe then Kaspersky is probably the way to go with Malwarebytes.

Ok, thanks for everybody's contributions, I will probably be going with either AVG/Bitdefender and Malwarebytes.

I was under the impression MSE has made great strides and is quite reliable now. I stopped relying on COMODO or Kapersky for my AV needs years ago and haven't had an issue.

You guys repeating anecdotes complaining about it missing big threats care to cite your sources?

It's quite the contrary. It used to be fairly reliable, but has gone downhill as of late.
