Hey all, thought I'd drop an intro post. Joined OC3D after seeing some component reviews on YT, so headed here, had a quick look around and there seems to be a lot of info to be gotten.

Bit about me, I'm Dave, an Armourer in the RAF, bombs, bullets, guns and explosives. Not as interesting as it sounds though haha. Currently reside in the south *boohiss* but moving up to Scotland next month.

With the up and coming new year, new house and new job I've decided to build my own gaming rig, something I've wanted to do for a while, but recent events have changed and now I should be able to afford this fun task, albeit bit by bit. After I get the base system, I'm after tinkering and modding, just like my old man :). I'm a hands on person so I know I'm going to enjoy this.

So here I am, after some knowledge, advice and pointers. I think I've come to the right place.

Welcome!

I was considering joining the RAF a few years ago. Still half considering now actually.

I got selected for the sponsorship scheme through sixthform and uni, but declined it in the end as I didn't want to be locked into the career. Kind of regret that now :/
Oh well!

Enjoy your stay anyway! :)

Depends what you want to do, though sponsorship sounds like going down the officer route, which is good & bad. Some trades are closed currently, but it's going to be harder to get in nowadays due to the recent SDSR cuts. Still the MOD still needs new people coming through as people leave.

Thanks for the replies :)

The sponsorship was for a pilot, so I'd have had to have been an officer for that. That's kind of what put me off, the 32 week training at Cranwell, followed by another 3 years of learning to fly and everything.

Just not sure I'd be too pleased with 18 years of school, 3 years of uni, followed by another 3 years of learning to fly.

Still, as I said, it's an option :)

Lots of job satisfaction there, and bonuses, but I just think they're glorified taxi drivers, delivering something from A to B (sometimes through Z, as I found out heading out to Afg!).

Just my opinion though. Wish I stuck it out at uni, but it would have just been a useless qualification for what I want to do now, which is down the CAD/CAM route.
