Hey guys I was looking into digital audio editing software and came across FL Studio, it looks good but I'm unsure if it really is or not. Its kind of pricey so I would like to have some opinions about the software before I buy it, also with audio editing do I need to have a sound card aswell?

it will use the systems primary sound device (directx), but a sound card will obviously create better audio AND draw less resources from the cpu.

i have been using FLStudioXL since version 7. i now use v11. :)

it is a simple sequencer at heart and very easy to use. the VST plugin support is amazing.

IMHO alot easy to use than propellerheads reason and cheaper too. ;) a million times better than others out there, that are in the same price range.

Ok VST, Virtual Instrument? What is VST plugins exactly? Also as far as a sound card goes, does it just sound better or can it also record and make music @ a higher level aswell? With FL Studio do you also need a mixer and keyboard to use it or just the program? Thx 4 your input mate

it's all in the software.
you do not need a sound card, as long as you have onboard sound.

as for VST... it is a standard of plugins that have compatibilty with most audio apps. (derived from an old app called cubase-VST)

no mixers or instruments needed to make music... but can be added later if desired.

I'd go for Reason man. It's way more complicated but you can do so much more with it. Luckily I have a couple of mates, one with a full-on studio to teach me :p

You only need the software but you'll find it much easier to play about if you get yourself a half decent midi interface. Get one that has keys, pads and knobs if you can. You can assign pretty much any function to any button/pad/ knob. Obviously some things are better suited to a particular input method than others.

I'm a lover of Ableton - have been using it for about two years now :) i'm pretty sure they have a demo so try that :)

Well I'll start with the software and then upgrade from there, are keyboards and the other stuff expensive? I could see how using a keyboard would help when trying to see what works and what doesn't, as for the midi interface what exactly does that do?

I've been using fruityloops since 3.5 (now on flstudio 8) and as yet have never used a keyboard with it. Having one would certainly make life easier, but i've used the piano roll and set it all up manually. I used to use it with an sound blaster live which didn't support ASIO and it wasn't easy to work with as the latencies went sky high with an effects. I was considering an EMU-1212M before i ended up buying my xonar essence. The xonar copes well enough as it does support ASIO. Using ASIO allows you to select your output channels and recording or input channels. The software mixer is pretty good though i've never actually utilised the ability to record. I use adobe audition for all my recording work.

You always used to be able to download trials of the software back in the day.

It would be nice to test it out before I buy it, do you know where to download a trial offer from?

For my mates, what is the difference between FL Studio Fruity Edition V10 & FL Studio 10 Producer? It jumps up more then double the price from one to the other?

Ok so for double the price do you think it is worth it? When you download a VST how many sounds or instruments do you get per VST? A friend recommended the VST massive for me, do you think there is enough instruments there to create a full song or would I need other VST's to make it work. Thanks again mate :)

the producer edition comes with essentials.

so the question is:

how serious are you?
i have the studio edition (signature with all plugins)

look here: https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php
it explains exactly what you get with each version.

i would recommend buying the producer edition, as you can record directly onto a track in realtime, whereas if you do not.... it becomes a PITA running and external recording app alongside FLstudio (latencies :( ).

each version is upgradable.
so if you decided to go cheap at first, you will eventually upgrade (i guarrantee it).

FL Studio Producer

Downloaded the demo tonight and man its awesome  Really hard for me to use right now I think I'll have to read up on it to get decent using the software. The producer version sounds good to me Diamond, I'll pick it up soon thank you ^_^

Dubstep Wobble
