Fizzing PSU

Tonight I powered up my "in the making" PC, minus it's CPU just to run the watercooling loop for a few hours. After setting up the CPU blocks etc (first time since the rebuild) I turned on the PSU and pressed power... it was then I noticed not a hell of alot was happening, and some smoke was slowly rising out of my Coolermaster Realpower 700  Tried again outside later incase it was a conflict with something else with the same results, the fan does not spin up, and you can just hear some fizzing. Any idea what is up? I have already emailed MicroDirect about an RMA but am curious as to what went wrong?

First time it was, second time it wasn't, as I have one of those ATX jumpers (green to black) jsut for this watercooling

sounds like it might have killed itself.. good job it didnt die when plugged into all your components..

Capacitor popped maybe? Can you see any burn marks or capacitors with bulging tops through the fan grill?

Can't see any burning, but then its hard to see in without pulling this apart, and I dont want to void my warrenty. I will try it again today, who knows, it may have fixed itself :D No rush anyway, half the kit for this PC is either awaiting stock or not even boguht yet... :( Damn Q9450s...

i had EXACTLY the same problem with mine. returned it to the shop and got a gamexstream instead. was a bit cheaper too.

any other good PSUs around the £80 mark then that is nice and quiet? I might be able to get an exchange, but I dont really have a problem with this PSU, probably my own fault... :D What would you recommend around the 600-700w mark?

It doesn't sound like it is your fualt. These days it is quite hard to get denied RMA. Just say it was dead out of the box.

Well flagged up the RMA, should get a return email monday, sent it away then, fingers crossed MD are good with returns and it is in my clutches by Friday, when I SHOULD have everything for this PC :D Ta for the help all
