fix noisy fan on gfx card

hi.

will do something about the gfx card to get a more quiet computer and can go 2 different ways.

the gfx card runs hot, even the manufacture agrees on that but not hot enough for it to be fixed through warranty.

been as high as 82c and leadtek specified 90c as the limit.

so either i will take off the heatsink clean it off and put on new fresh AS5 and hope for the best, i dont have the normal tiny fan but a larger one.

or i could buy an accelero X1 http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=91&data=1&disc=

is it worth an attempt to use the old heatsink with fresh thermal paste ?

the heatsink is around 6-7months old and cant say its more noisy now then when i bought it but if the temp lowers so will the fan speed as the speed of the fan is dynamicly adjusted towards the temperature of the gpu.

also wonder about the memory chips, i assume i need to fix new "pads" for them too if i use the old heatsink ?

Regards

The MX-1 prolly isn't too bad but I'm betting AS5 is better. If your budget easily allows it Raven, I'd go for the Accelero. If not, remount :).

seen 2 different reviews now that claims its better then as5.

mx-1 is also priced higher than ceramique and equal to as5.

but have yet to find a store with pads.

well i know when my video cards sensor worked my NV Silencer 5 (Rev. 3) kept it under 55c it used to hit around 80-100c with the stock cooler. Not sure bout thier new. If a NV Silencer 5 fits id get that mine is quiet and exhausts the hot air out of case does a killer job i rarely go above 55c most times not above 50.

dhes is not something i need or want as it makes much more noise as it needs a more powerful fan.

i have very good airflow in the case and last time i checked i gained about 1celsius 2 atmost when i removed the side and put a tablefan blowing into the case.

also nv silencer produces more then twice the noise off the accelero x1 and noise is of great concern for me as i sometimes sleep on my couch and then the computer is 30cm from my ears.

in my bed its about 2meters.

also i have a 7800gt and the gpu is made with 110nm technology and not 130nm technology as the 6800 is built with so it also produces less heat.

and for overclocking, well i do it and like it but im not doing it to the extreme as i prefer i cool and quiet computer.

could also add, nvsilencer is sold out on my local store and they dont get any new until new years eve and no other store in close proximity has them but the accelero x1 can i easily get.

ah lol im a overclocker iv gained 200mhz on memory with my cooler and i havet modded bios. The cooler in my case is most quiet thing i have lol 5 hds 2 cdroms 5 fans and a cpu fan that runs 5000 rpms.

its a bit more noisemaking stuff than i have.

3 harddrives and my newest seagate is the most noisy one, even more than my old 30gb deathstar.

the cpu fan is a panaflo 92mm running on a zalman fanmate set to lowest speed and is able to cool to 42-43c at max load.

i changed the chipsetfan to a passive heatsink and have a 92mm fan taped to the bottom of the case running at low speed creating airflow to the heatsink and addon cards.

i have a 120mm sidefan and a 120mm fan on the back both blowing air into the case at low speed and have an "extremly" good airflow as all components are cooled efficiently.

harddrives 39/39/40 celsius so now i have that d*** gfx card fan to fix.

but i dont seem to find any pads for the memorys.

can the pads on the original cooler be "reused" incase i need to send the card in under warranty ?

Go for the accelero. AC make dam good coolers.

lets hope they manage better this time than they have in the past, 2 of their coolers i got for a 9800pro card decided to die on me within a couple of months.

i used small amouts of as5 on mine with nv5 but differt coolers so not sure. Keep all the parts incase you do have to send it back i love evga their do anything warranty sept real physical dammage. Last card i sent i modded bios and they sent out a new one no probs.

all parts will be safed stored in the box the card came in safely put away in a cabinet.

i will probably not use as5, leaning on ceramique instead to avoid any possible problems of shortcurcuit and similar problems.

got out today and bought the accelero x1 and seems to be a sturdy heatsink.

the fan is mounted onto somekind of soft rubber/plastic which in turn is fastened onto the heatsink and its about 1cm wide so should take up most vibrations the fan creates.

also mx-1 thermal paste is preapplied to it and will use it, according to a couple of reviews i read says its better than both ceramique and as5.

it also comes with 2 different power connectors to fit more gfx cards.

also comes with a backplate i wont use as i dont have any memory chips on the backside of the card but will use the backplate i have with the stock cooler if possible.

the stock cooler is an active/passive combination and the backside looks like this.

changed the fan now and be glad none of you was nearby, think half my hometown heard me curse the damn computer and the cat as she tried to help me

get off the stock cooler was an easy task as i had used the computer just moments earlier.

the first problem arised when i was t put on the thermal pads.

they was EXTREMLY RIDICOULOSLY sticky to anything and everything except the memories they was supposed to stick on but fixed it.

then i was to install the gfx card but didnt fit as the chipset heatsink was in the way so had to remove that one and fit a small fan instead THEN i could install the gfx card.

took the time to rearrange some wiring and also changed tic on the cpu to as5 and also changed the fan to a lowspeed lownoise fan and cpu temp has sofar dropped 1c

however the gpu has dropped WAY more than 1c, 22c to be precise.

have atitool artifact running and have been running for 20minuts now and gpu is at 60celsius.

with the stock cooler it has topped 82celsius.

i have also found out that the nv silencer has a flaw in the construction.

the stock cooler cools more then just the gpu, it also cools the power converters at the end of the card and so does the accelero x1 but the nv silencer has no such function.

here is the stock cooler i have and as you can se the air exiting the cooler is directed to the lower end of the card.

heres an image off the accelero x1 and the black plastic thingy that goes out from the cooler makes sure the air exiting the cooler is directed down onto the components on the gfx card, none of the images shows it but their is a hole below the black plastic thingy where air can escape through.

heres an image of the nv silencer 5 and as far as i can se it creates no airflow at the end of the card as both the stock cooler and accelero x1 does.

sofar im satisfied with the cooler and performs excellent and QUIET.

also the tic seems to be as good as i have read.

im giving it 4.5 kicks in the nuts of 5 possible ;)

btw the fan on the accelero is rated at 130-140ma and the fan on the stock cooler is rated 340ma so there is no problem connecting it to the gfx card which i have and even now with atitool artifact running for almost 40 minuts now the fan is inaudible and should improve night gaming experience alot.

EDIT:

forgot to say, i have a third party temp sensor i put down the pcb and the gpu and it reports 47c so seems the gpu temp diode is somewhat correct.

Sounds like a nice cooler! It definately looks nice when mounted on that card, that's for darn sure.

And I don't think you need to worry to much about it not being designed to cool the power caps. Most cards don't have provisions to cool those caps and they do just fine without it.

Glad it's workin' well for ya, nice temps too. :yumyum:

Good news man :) The Silencer's design (the thing about where the air goes) is actually favored over the Accelero due to the fact that the air is vented outside of the case instead of heating up the air in the case

perhaps so but wouldnt surprise me if lack of cooling at the end of the card can have a negative impact in some situations.

for exampe this card is equipped with heatsinks at the end of the card and with the nv silencer on they dont get much if any air ventilation.

http://nix.un1337.de/Spica/7800GTX/IMG_0654.jpg

the same thing goes for the x1900xtx, and the x1900xtx draws 120w in 3d mode which creates alot of heat.

read about a card yeasterday where parts of the power converters reached 80celsius which is too high.

it might not have a bad impact the first week or 2 but the hotter the components has to work the sooner they will fail.
