First Time Build

Ok guys, thanks for all the advice so far. Have decided on first stage of build...

Cooler Master CM690 II Advanced USB 3.0 ATX Case - £77.99
Corsair HX850 Professional Series HX 850W ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Gold PSU - £119.99
Intel Core i5 4670K Quad Core Retail CPU (Socket 1150, 3.40GHz, 6MB, Haswell, 84W) - £184.24
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive - £86.99
Samsung 24x SATA Retail DVD Writer with 3 Bezels - £17.75
Microsoft Windows 8 Standard 64 bit OEM, WN7-00403, English Version - £73.37
Gigabyte Z87X-OC Motherboard £157.84
Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz CL9 8GB £59.48

Spend so far : £777.65 from £1500 budget.

Will build initially with stock cooler, but will definitely add aftermarket cooler at a later date. Have opted for lower profile RAM to ensure my cooler options in future are more broad. I've also decided to go for the Z87X-OC as it is only £15 more expensive than the UD3H.

Order will be placed tomorrow so I'll post back and let you know how it goes (and no doubt seek some build advice!).

Thanks.

are you sure that a 128gb ssd is enough.
consider the samsung 840 evo it's just a bit slower but it's a lot cheaper

I intend to use the SSD for Windows 8 and various other day to day software, and use a 2TB HDD for data storage and everything else? I haven't listed the HDD in the build spec at the minute, because I'm only interested in building and booting to OS for now.

** edit **

Have just noticed the cost saving by switching to 120gb 840 evo. Thanks!

I don't think you need a 850 watt power supply, you can go with something lower wattage and use the extra for a 240GB or 256GB ssd. If your not getting multiple graphics cards you can get something around a 600 or 650 watt psu.
Something like this http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Comp...+Bronze+Modular+Power+Supply+?productId=53656 would probably be enough.

Edit : but that is a pretty good deal for the AX 850.

I chose the 850 because I do intend to install multiple graphics cards in future.

Thanks

It's for gaming so surely it has to be windows?

What i meant was i would never buy OEM for windows because OEM software will lock itself to the motherboard model # and if you try to switch motherboards you will not be able to boot and will basically lose everything on the drive.

There is no retail version of windows 8, is there?

Ok guys, in mid build here and have 2 questions.

Power supply has come with an 8 pin plug marked "CPU supply" and it splits into 2 x 4 pin. Motherboard has 2 sockets, one 8 pin marked ATX_12V_2x4 and one 4 pin marked ATX_12V. Which one do I use?

The case front led lights: only the power switch has polarity marked, all the rest have various coloured cables but all have a white cable. I've assumed that white cables are -ve. That ok?

try to use the cable management gromits it makes your rig look cleaner
and it improves your airflow

That mobo looks surprisingly good in that case.
lot's of succes :)

Currently installing h100i. Is the thermal paste that comes per applied fine to use, or would I be better putting my own paste on CPU before installation?

Depends what paste you have. If you have an expensive one (NT-H1 or Arctic Silver), it might be better. The stock paste will be fine though.
