First time build

Most people including myself opt for Noctua fans they are quiet and always been reliable for me and also have good CFM.

I have recently seen new ones being listed NF-S12B FLX being advertised as the new ones out, I haven't seen a review yet but being Noctua they probably are pretty good

Nice! I'm very envious, my build has hit a wall trying to diagnose a bum part, otherwise we have pretty much the same parts, looks good!
 
ok pc was on for 3 hours last night, just downloading stuff, browsing nothing much to be honest and this is what my temps etc are atm -

from cpuid

running at 3.07ghz

volts - 0.94 / 0.99

core temps range - 39/37/39/36

gpu temps 1st card - 31c / 2nd card 37c

speedstep disabled / llc enabled.

not done any OC'in yet, but does that look good or bad or .... ?
 
Looks about right dude tbh. I doubt you will have any issues clocking to 4ghz, be pretty simple with that tbh, just make sure you work out the lowest possible Vcore and not just settle for an easy option. Putting the effort in is a much better and rewarding way for you to learn your pc.

Right I have a tiny bit of understanding on the overclocking side, but I dont trust myself so can anyone give me some advice on where to start on overclocking, 4ghz is the aim. Any good guides that people can suggest ?

I did take note of Tom's review that it appears you can get away with possible low cpu voltages with the i7 950 I think.
 
Wait for Toms overclocking video....? lol thats if its not to far away, but he said he was working on it.

But if you want maybe just do a small overclock...?

3.8 or so is normally really easy to get to.

And being new just make sure your CPU safety settings are still on so when it gets so hot it just turns your PC off and runs only fans at 100% to get the CPU ect cool, well some motherboards do that some just restart and others just turn off, any way most the time your PC will reset and not boot if you do some thing wrong so long as you don't turn those settings off.
 
anyone got an explanation why sometimes my system shows 4gb mem and sometimes 6gb ? bad memory or ?

earlier I freshly booted up and it shows 4gb, I reboot and it says 6gb, happened last night also.

Changed the sticks about but made no difference.

I had the same thing happen.

I did try each stick of RAM individually (2GB at one time) and my computer did boot each time however when I put all 3 in it only registered 4GB.

After awhile I just decided to buy new RAM.

Have you tried booting using only 1 stick to see if a stick is faulty?
 
Not gone that far yet, wasnt sure if it was something else causing it. Also that could be a pain to do as if it sometimes boots with 6gb I might find that I can boot with all 3 sticks and never know which one is faulty.

Would a memtest be a good idea to try out ?
 
ive had that problem aswell mate, i had to do a cmos reset and sometimes its just windows thats playin funny buggers, use cpu-z and see if its in there if it is your fine mate its just windows not reading it right
 
yeah cpu-z was saying 6gb all the time, the bios + windows was saying 4gb, also to add it seems to only happen on cold boot.
 
I have used windows RAM tester, it free: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

You could also memtester86+, which is also free: http://www.memtest.org/

However both of these are 32bit live CDs so they max out at 4GB of RAM. So you'll need to test each stick individually (which I recommend anyway).

Note: 1) The windows RAM tester will keep testing until you tell it to stop.

2) I would let the test run for a while (more then 1 sweep) to be sure when testing.
 
Theres NOTHING wrong with your ram. Do a bios clear first, and if its still arsey thers a couple tweaks in the bios you can do.

It can also be that the cooler isnt fitted properly.
