First Time Build (Gaming)

Yeah I was being tempted with 7970's looking at the XFX ones as I'm a sucker for their Double D's, I think they look really good. This is where i'm torn the most between AMD and Nvidea, as i can just about afford the top of the line AMD but haven't got any chance of get 690 and even the 680s are more than i'd like to spend on the graphics card.

I'm still tempted by triple monitor. I would most likely go for 1 24" monitor until i can afford 2 more. I was going to use my HDTV (shock horror yes I know) until I saved up for 1 of these (http://www.scan.co.uk/products/24-asus-vs247h-led-black-full-hd-hdmi-dvi-vga-1920x1080-5ms-300cd-m-500000001) resolution is 1920 x 1080 and then possibly get 2 more in the future. I use a laptop at the moment but have mouse keyboard ect for when i'm at home.

Note: In all likelihood I will probably extend my budget to be £1650 to include the one monitor and £1500 for the desktop - now i've noticed that it dosen't have a mini display port which is probably something I should look for when I choose a monitor (which will probably cost me a lot more).

Also when shopping for parts, where should i look to compare prices? at the moment i use Scan and dabs but are there any others i should keep an eye on?

Also when looking at a graphics card which numbers are the most important? The Gpu speed, memory speed, memory GB or number of cores. I guess that the architecture of AMD vs Nvidea is very different so number of core cant really be compared. Or is it just best to look up reviews with benchmarks?

best to look up reviews with benchmarks after working out what you need the gpu for i.e how many monitors are you running and at what resolution

Shaders, but check the architecture is efficient and also you can only compare shader count of cards from the same family (eg. 5830 & 5850 & 5870 & 5970/ 560Ti & 560Ti 448)

Yeh I have an IPS monitor myself and I can't recommend them enough. At that price it's a really good deal imo as I paid over £400 for my U2410
