First time build. Advice please.

Doesn`t supprize me it`s so cheap. The pre Dx10 cards should plummit from here on it, then slowly dissappear til there`s about 3 in the range to purchase sub £100.

Still, its a faaair price.

You can get a 8400gs for about £35 lol.. But it's mainly used to cinema systems (rubbish in gaming. better off getting a high 7 series)

As a rule of thumb for cheap graphics at the moment, first port of call ATI x1950, Second port of Call 7950 or GX2 for the price you cant beat ATI really at the moment, although that GX2 is ludicrously low.

What i really want to know, is which will give better gaming performance, clear cut answer.

The ati 512meg 1950x linked to earlier,

Or the nvidia 1gig 7950 X2 linked to a few posts back?

Thanks, thats great. I'll go for the nvidia. Normally over 200 quid eh? well, it's good im getting it for 115, and i hope you all remember the UK legislation that means that if a UK site misprices, they HAVE to sell at the advertised price if you order it. Which i have. JOY TO THE UK LAW SYSTEM

First off, wouldnt like to have that GX2 and only a 450w PSU, might pose a problem, and there isnt really much performance change between the 256MB and 512MB at lower resolutions.. :)

Ide personally spend that extra £15 on a higher wattage PSU like the 550W i showed you..

Yeah get a higher PSU, you would need it for the GX2. 450w is low these days (e.g 1kw PSU) and doesn't really run the newer PC parts.

and yet you are only on 520W? so what gfx are you using, and why would the GX2 use so much power? There's a thread in the forums about how you never need a CPU above 500W, so cant i get by on a 450?

EDIT: ah, your's is the whisper model, i guess you hate noise.

As a sidepoint, i am going to use my schools laser cutter to cut a side window, but can the top panel be removed, so that i would be able to do his to the top.

and with the kind of circuit in a PSU, all the components need to have individual wattages lower than PSU? no.... because 27 amps times 240 volts would make thousands of amps.. So how does it work?

And it says 400 is the min, so wont 450 do?

power = current * voltage

At the end of the day it's up to you what you buy. I wouldn't buy less than a good quality 500~600 watt psu for myself these days, as even the 8800 gts requires 25 amps so there's little future upgrade room as the gpu's get bigger.

sounds like a 550w would be a good thing then... thats more saving to be done. Now could somebody help me with my case modding thread in my sig?

Argh, im having major gripes over whether to go ATI or Nvidia. I'm sooo tempted by ATI, cos its cheaper, and honestly, it will run source games, and probably oblivion and flight sim x, as well as maybe UT3. Soo.... i really want to spend that spare cash on modding it, cos being cool counts more to me, than a bit of extra performance, when i can always spend more later, which doesn't bother me much..

But if you get the performance bang on now, the modding is ALOT ALOT ALOT ALOT cheaper than buying new parts, sack making it look 'cool' just buy a smart case for now, and mod the hell out of it for nothing in a week or so when u have an extra fiver, honestly you will thank me for that.. Get the 550W, 450W is a little low for my liking it would most likely run the rig you propose, but it would be running at a pretty high usage which would shorten its life time..
