First System Build £600

Hi all would like to get some advise if you could please.

I've been using a Mac for about 5 years now as it suited me best for what I was doing at the time and now that it no longer serves its function I'm looking at putting together my first build. (Never done it before so its going to be a learning experience) Its gonna be used primarily for gaming, day to day stuff and my first adventures into overclocking. I've watched TTL's budget gaming rig and I've got about £600 I can throw at it and this is what I have come up with through Aria.

Any help would be much appreciated.

AMD ATHLON II X3 450 3.2GHz

Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H AMD 890GX

4GB Muskin - 1333

MSI HD6870 Twin FrozR II 1Gb

500GB Seagate Barracuda

Corsair HX750 PSU

Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler

Samsung Blu-Ray Drive

Total: £607

You still need a case. I’d go with a samsung spinpoint f3 1tb, get a cheaper psu(for 1gpu you dont need 750W), do you need a bluray drive? Can’t say anything about the cooler because I never heard of it. The CPU,GPU,RAM,mobo are decent.

Case is going to be a BitFenix Colossus. The £600 budget is purely for the innards of the rig, case, OS and monitor I've kept separate. The idea behind such a big case is that I can add to it as and when and the PSU was just to future proof for any upgrades. Finally the Blu ray is purely for ripping HD DVD's for a media server.

What would you recommend in terms of the amount of power to comfortably run a single GPU and leave decent breathing space?

For the above setup you don’t need anything more then 500W psu, cx600 wont break a sweat an you could possibly run 2x6870. If u are buying with a second GPU in mind you have to get a better mobo cause the second pcie will only run at x4.

Cool well that knocks off about £50, anything you would upgrade with that spare or would you just leave the rest as is?

As an eg that £50 could give me an Athlon II X4 640 & GA-890FXA-UD5 in place of what I've listed

I would get a better cpu, but the 840 is out of stock. Example:

Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler £ 15.75

Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP 12x BD-ROM / 16x DVD Writer Drive - Black £ 41.50

Corsair Builder Series 600CX Power Supply £ 44.60

1TB Samsung HD103SJ SpinPoint F3 SATA-II 3.5" Hard Drive £ 33.25

Mushkin 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 6-9-7-24 Radioactive - 996983 £ 38.29

AMD Phenom II X4 840 Quad Core 95w (Socket AM3) Processor - Retail £ 64.75

Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H AMD 880G (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £ 65.50

MSI ATI Radeon HD 6870 Twin FrozR II 1048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £ 154.50

Total £561.11
