Hi guys I've recently joined his forum, and in the next 2/3 months want to build my first decent rig. i have quite a bit of experience building computers around the age of 16-18. then as soon as i went to college bought a macbook pro for my studies, but 3 years later here I am completely outdated with the new technologies in these computer parts now days.

So here is the plan.

starting from scratch im looking to spend around £400 on a decent rig that will be used for:

- Playing HD movies on my big screen tv

- Streaming movies to my parents tv in the living room

- casual gaming

I'm just asking for advice on what parts i should go for considering all of you guys on here know a lot more than i do

I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys have to offer,

Thanks in advance

Luke.

400 is a little to low of a budget for a decent build unless you have some parts laying around that you can reuse such as a case, DVD drive, monitor, or decent power supply.

I have a monitor (17inch NOT widescreen) doesnt bother me too much i can always upgrade that in the future, i will be playing all media on my tv which will be connected by hdmi. i also have a dvd drive. i do need a new power supply as my current one is on its way out (cheap, noisy as fxck)

Decided on a M-ATX build since you don't have a high budget, m atx parts are slightly cheaper..

I haven't included a GPU, since I don't know your GPU preference, so choose what you want. Change the watts on the power supply to suit this.

i3 Build, but depending what you choose for GPU and power supply, chuck in an i5 if you can. Like serious, an i3 is shocking!

You won't be able to overclock with this since its a H61 chipset. I will put together a AMD build - Unless someone beats me too it.

Im guessing you have a hard drive you can use.

EDIT: Change RAM to https://www.aria.co....productId=41783

Don't think Mobo supports 1600Mhz

We should be able to configure a decent rig.

I recently put together an AMD build on a different thread (500 Euro "Gaming" build.) All parts are quouted from Arias web site.

here is a suggestion taking into consideration the components you already have.

ARIANET Synergy Black Midi Tower Chassis w/ 450W Power Supply #47026 £ 16.99

VTX HD 7850 Graphics Card #47805 £ 189.95

GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3 AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 PCI-Express ATX Motherboard #48467 £ 42.99

AMD Bulldozer FX-4100 3.60GHz (3.80GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 4-Core Processor #46818 £ 69.99

8GB Exceleram Value Series LP E30113A (2x4GB) 1333 (PC3-10666) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM CAS 9-9-9-24 1.5V #48306 £ 23.99

320GB Western Digital AV-GP 24/7 SATA II Hard Drive - CLEAN PULL #48044 £ 41.24

This totals £384.82 before any taxes or shipping.

oooo forgot the 7850 exisited.. Thats quite a nice build imo.. Nice one.

Thanks guys, ill check both of these out and see what i come up with, my only worry is that i have never before experienced an AMD processor and i dont know how well they perform etc

I'd go with the AMD build, Or perhaps mix the both.

Stock performance of the I3-2130 will be a little better then the FX-4100 but the FX chip can be overclocked. You would be hard pressed to get an I5 system built for less then £400.

Here is an I5 build with a low spec graphics card.

Note: this does not include and HDD. the cheapest HDD comes in at around £30 putting the total over the £400 Limit.

ARIANET Synergy Black Midi Tower Chassis w/ 450W Power Supply £ 15.53

MSI Z77A-G45 Intel Z77 Socket 1155 DDR3 PCI-Express Motherboard £ 82.99

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Unlocked Processor - Retail £ 127.95

Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £ 67.99

4GB Mushkin Enhanced Silverline #996768 (2x2GB) 1333 (PC3-10666) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM CAS 9-9-9-24 1.5V £ 16.66

Sub Total £ 311.12

Delivery £ 6.95

VAT £ 63.61

Grand Total £381.68

Thank you guys for all your input!

The builds you guys have put together for me sound wicked

but i think i might stretch out on the price so i can get an i5!

this sounds good but if i was to get a better graphics card, would i need to get a more powerful psu?

That would depend on how much better the graphics card is. Remember also that you will need an HDD. If you can increase the budget by £100 you should be okay.

Here is a list of the power requirements for the latest cards.

I think I should be able to increase my budget by another £100 pretty easily, considering i ain't buying just yet so I got a couple of months to save

Bit late but I found this youtube video that an amaerican made, got all his parts for under $600

Thats about around £500

Runs BF3 at 1080x1200 at around 31FPS at medium settings!

Alright guys, after all the response I think I'm gonna need to spend a bit more, but not to worry I have noticed that aria do a finance option so I think I'll go for that and have a year to pay it off interest free (SWEET!) I'll post a list of parts I'll put together tomorrow to see what you all think,

Speak soon
