First build......need guidance

Totally new to overclocking and want to build my first rig. Just need to be sure that the parts will work together with no major bottle necks and put me in a good starting point for future upgrades.

Here goes:

Case: Corsair Mid-Tower 600T Special Edition in Graphite White - £130

Like the look of the case, not into the over the top or very simple cases

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 - £150

CPU: Intel i5 2500K 3.30GHz - £180

Did look at the AMD FX-8120 or 8150 but understand that Intel are better for overclocking and gives me the option to upgrade to the Ivybridge when they come out

(sorry AMD lovers!)

GPU: Sapphire ATI Radeon 6950 HD - £210

Went for the 2GB so that it wouldnt need replacing in the future, can add a 2nd if required

Memory: 16GB (4 x 4GB) G.Skill Ripjaw Z 2133MHz DDR3 - £130

Might be over kill but its there for if and when i need it (May just end up going for 2 x 4GB to start with)

PSU: Corsair AX850 - £140

Quite with enough poke to run anything i throw at it, plus i like it being modular for easy maintenance

HDD: WD 2TB Caviar Green SATA-600 64MB - £108

Not totally sure this is the right choice as i have a NAS at home so maybe SSD to start, not sure

Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5 Premium 3.5g - £6.70

Going for a good compound as cooling will be mainly fans

That is the basic set up with options to build and add at a later date.....when money allows as well!

It all comes in at around £1000 ($1600) which is around my budget.

Future upgrades include a second GPU if and when the rig starts to struggle and a 120GB SSD (like this one: Corsair 120GB Force GT - £130) for the OS, releaseing the 2TB for data (if used at all).

Im concerned about cooling though as with the case being a mid-tower im worried that if i want to upgrade to W/C in the future then it wont all fit in. Would the basic rig run happily on A/C for a while and when it comes to upgrading to W/C look at upgrading the case??

Any suggestions or comments welcome

If you're not going to be running a three monitor setup, then I would take a look at the 560ti 448 or 384 core instead of the 6950. Also take a look at MX-4 thermal paste. If you're going to overclock then you'll need a decent aftermarket cooler as well - Noctua NH-D14, Thermalright Silver Arrow, Phanteks or NZXT Havic 140 or Corsair H100. Also that motherboard isn't Gen3 i.e. doesn't have any PCI-E 3.0 slots.

I just got a TJ07 case from Silverstone.. it's a watercooling case by design but just fits the Noctua D 14 ... It has masses of fans, 4 (120 m) intake and 2 (92 m)outtake. It's a tad exspensive and hasn't got great cable managment, but it's the most beautiful quality..

Anyway it would fit bboth your needs

What about a CPU cooler for the time being? Or are you sticking with the stock one?

Im not sure what cooler to use yet, didnt know whether to use the standard to start with to get the system up and running and then introduce a cooler when i see what temps everything is working at.

Was thinking of adding the Thermalright Silver one the rig is up and running in a normal state. I dont want anything external from the case and im not sure that the Corsair H100 will fit.

Im quite picky with the asthetics of a case. I like the look of the Corsair 600T and trying to work my project around that, unless onlyone knows of a case along the lines of the 600T with a bit more room?

Dude if you're using the 600T, the H100 was just about designed for that case.

What are you using this for?

An all round rig. I will use it for high end games, some publishing/photoshop work, networking and server emulation. It is in a family home though so may occasionally be used by my partner for her work. This is why i dont want anything outrageous on the outside but i can still tinker away with things on the inside and it be able to do everything i ask of it.

So its worth paying the extra £60 for something like this?

ASRock Z68 EXTREME7 - £220 ($350)

I dont think having PCIe Gen3 is worth paying extra for. It is not used yet, and it's "bandwidth" double. So PCIe Gen 2 x16 lane has the same bandwidth than a PCIe Gen 3 x8 lane. Honestly if you are going single or dual graphics card at the current state I would not really care about PCIe Gen 3.

You might want to rethink the thermal paste. I'm not an expert on it so I can't suggest anything. Hopefully, someone here can.

One thing I'm wondering is can you swap os drives without having to buy another copy?

Is it worth getting a PCIe GEN3 motherboard yet as GPUs are mainly PCIe GEN2 and I'm sure they won't drop drastically in price for over a year yet. Would it not be worth getting the GEN3 motherboard when I get a GEN3 GPU?
