First Build Ever!!!

This is my first time building a rig. I am a 24 yr. old male living in North Carolina USA and I do theatrical lighting and stage production. My rig isn't finished but so far here's what I've got:

Mobo: Asus Rampage IV Formula

CPU: Intel I7 3820 3.6 Sandy Bridge-E

CPU Cooling: Corsair H100 (top mounted pushing in)

GPU: PNY 9800GT (670/80 soon!)

RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Redline Frostbyte 1866Mhz 9-10-9-27

OD: crappy dvd/cd burner from old emachines rig (hopefully a bluray sometime this year!)

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB (scavenged from old rig, it'll be for Games/music/movie storage)

EHDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB

SSD: (none yet but Corsair Force GT and OCZ Vertex 4 in the future!)

PSU: OCZ Fatal1ty 1000W 80+ Gold semi-modular

SC: hopefully a Xonar Phoebus by Winter

these pics were taken as soon as I finished building

i like how it siuts on an old pc case haha. But nice job. 1000 watts is seriously overkill though. Unless you plan on 4 680's lol. But nice anyway ^^ Also if you are wanting to save money get a 670. Or a 4GB version of a 670.

looks good, id like a psu like that in my rig but from experience the ocz doesnt make good psus

Looking very clean and tidy indeed, great work man! Defo get a 670 over a 680, and seeing as your using 1 monitor the 2GB model would suffice. As for an SSD, the Sandisk Extreme is my personal favourite, the Samsung 830, Kingston HyperX 3K, Muskin Chronos Deluxe, Intel 520, Corsair Force GT, OCZ Vertex 4, Patriot Pyro, Wildfire, Pyro SE and Wildfire SE are all top SSD's. Yeah... there's a lot of choice out there in the SSD market. Oh, and a white LED kit would look great in the rig too, would light up your components nicely.

on a side note I really wanted the mushkin redline ridgeback with the black pcb instead of the frostbyte w/ green (994057) but they were sold out at the time of my purchase + I got 1866Mhz for cheaper than the 1600Mhz but it had nice timings @ CL7-7-7-24. i still dont know what to do with the fan cables for the H100 because I hate the way it looks right now. Hope to get some case fans (noctua, scythe SS, cougar) and I want to put my rad in a push pull but idk if I can achieve that in this case.. it would mean the rad would be above chassis below the top cover and idk if I can fit a rad + fan up there. Also, really wish there were dust cover attachments made for the phantom 410.. I might have to make some myself because I smoke in my room and it gets dusty. Another thing, the air coming out of the back is chilly... like actually cold and I wasn't expecting that. All in all this has been an exciting experience but I'm sad now that I've built it, even though it's not done. After I get the 670/680 I'd love to sell it and build another. The rush of choosing parts and then them showing up at my doorstep and the build.. it's just a rewarding experience and would love to do it again in the future. Been playing around with RAM Disk, and I'm going to try out RAM Cache as well sometime in the near future. I can't wait to try out fraps recording to RAM. Hopefully I'll get some red braided cables to go with my black ones. Sorry for the long winded and spastic follow up!

I didn't know a lot about the psu but it was gold rated so I figured I'd be ok and + I wanted sleeved cables and I decided to go with this one even though it's major overkill, but I like having room to grow and I one day would like to do SLI with 2 670s. I orginally was going with the Corsair AX850 but saw that I'd pay the same price after buying ind. sleeved cables and the color and LEDs matched my color scheme. Also, I'm tempted to paint the orange trim red on the case but not if I get the Zotac AMP! 4GB 670 which is what I'm leaning towards if Asus doesn't release a 4GB DirectCU II Top model. My buddy is building an all AMD budget rig with a 7970 and we're very competative people and I just want to beat his so I haven't decided between the 670/680 even though the 670 is a great buy considering it's so close to the 680. I just want to dog is 7970 but I'm scared to undercut because I heard they overclock well, which we'll also be competing in OCing. Idk, sounds dumb huh? =P

Oh yeah, the case it's sitting on was originally a Gateway 2000 with a Pentium II and onboard gfx then it was a frankenstein gutted m-atx emachines build that was retrofitted and had the 9800GT added. But that was back when i didn't know too much about hardware. I took the Optical drive and HDD and 9800GT from that build and moved it over to this one. It literally ate the other PCs guts and mounted it lol

the screen is a 720p Samsung 43" plasma that I can't wait to get rid of even though I just bought it 6 months ago. I was just misinformed before I made my purchase. It's terrible as a monitor although it looks good playing HD movies. The reason I want a 4GB 670/680 is because I'm bying a Catleap 2560x1440 IPS when I sell the tv and hopefully nvidia surround eventually as well as running 2k/4k textures in skyrim also HD texture mods in other games as well so I'll need that extra memory. My bad y'all, I stayed up all night playing with my new toy and my mind is all fluttered! Thanks for the comments!

can't wait to change out that white/bluish looking led inside the fan that came with the NZXT case and also some Red/White led strips. I'm thinking the red on the middle fan along with white on the door & top as well as one to between the top panel and chassis and front panel and chassis to light up the fans. Especially when I get new fans. Idk which LEDS thouugh.. either bitfenix, phobya or NZXT sleeved it's looking like. Bitfenix is just a little pricey though and I don't need a full Meter from NZXT.

thanks guys! I'm really surprised with how well my first build has turned out. I know I spent way too much time watching youtube vids and reading forum reviews. but I'm a little ocd like that. It's just hard to shake buyers remorse when the market has so much to offer right now, especially since I could have saved a couple hundred on the mobo/psu alone and be well on my way to a 670 but I thought I'd spoil myself and do a fun build over a little bit longer time frame.

if you're buying a large screen monitor like that get a 4Gb model a 680 would outperform it if you can clock it higher but a 7970 will be close or beating it every now and then. A 670 won't beat either.

Wait what? A 670 will outperform a 7970 at those resolutions, and an overclocked 670 can very nearly match a 680 too.

A gold rated power supply means that its effiency is above 90% I think It does not mean it is good

I figured if it was manufactured well enough to be whithin those specs then ipso facto good product...

has anyone had problems with this PSU? Any RMAs or the like?

thanks guys, I've never joined these forums before and wasn't sure how my build would compare to the awesome custom water cooled rigs I've seen around but I'm glad y'all like it! Every one I know says I went overboard since this really isn't within my monetary means but damnit, boys have to have toys!

The rating on the PSU is only for its power efficiency

(what percent of power coming out of the wall is actually going through the computer)

It has nothing to do with the actual build quality.

OCZ PSUs do have a bit of a reputation around here for supplying dirty power and dying randomly

Some people have problems, some don't: its just the luck of the draw...
