Hi guys,

after reading many posts on here, seeing all the pics and getting various emails, I've decided I am now motivated enough to build my own rig. I am however a little outdated with hardware, and need some assistance
tongue.gif
.

I want a rig that is decent enough and will be overclockable to decent lengths.

Questions:

What motherboard (decent OC abilities/settings available in BIOS)

What CPU for general PC usage (gaming, programming etc...) (i3,i5,i7,AMD line?)

What memory for nice overclocking(loose timings etc...)

What GFX card (decent for gaming, newish games)

What PSU (voltage,make, modular? etc...)

And also... what case? Open side (window) would be best for me, big enough for water cooling soon

Anything I've missed.

I have no set a budget, but with moving and amounting many debts (thank you Visa), I am not looking to spend silly cash. Bang for buck is what I want. Definately needs to be OVERCLOCKED please.

If people can list some hardware, me be happy:)

Thank you guys

The psu you have suggested,i would change for corsair tx 650M

For gaming you wont need the i7-2600k,i5-2500k would be better suited.

For the money saved on cpu i would spend on higher clocked rams like gskill ripjawsX 1600mhz at 1.5v

Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 Intel Z68 (REV B3) Socket 1155 DDR3 see what the GA-Z68X-UD4 since ur using a dedicated GPU

i7-2600K 3.40GHz 1155

G.Skill Ripjaw 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit at minimum 1600MHz ram speed I'd say go higher SB takes advantage of higher clocks.

XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 XXX 1024MB GDDR5 GO NVIDIA you wont be sorry AMD you'll be sorry

700W OCZ ModXStream Pro Modular OCZ is not making psus anymore afaik so warranty might be hard to uphold GO CORSAIR

Hitachi Deskstar 500GB 5K1000 - for now. I have other HDD's around.

I'd def say the 2500k will be enough, get a decent aftermarket cooler for it thought (OC!)

Also, 8gb for me at least, is a minimum now, even my Q6600 had 8gb and it made a difference in certain games.

GPU-wise I'd be looking at a GTX 570 (or AMD equivalent) as a minimum. The KFA reviewed by Tom recently would do the business!

PSU: a decent 750w - I have a Corsair - so you can add a 2nd 570 (or AMD...) later. I've just done this and it's great.

Oh, I would go for a Z68 mobo rather than a P67 - just cos

I like ASUS as they've been consistantly good for me.

I tend to compile a lot of code on my machine, so was wanting to go for the best CPU for the price. Gaming is not hugely important lol. What would I lose in terms of performance going from 2600k to 2500k?

Sorry lost that part, maybe i7-2600k would be better for you,but faster ram like 2133 mhz would increase performance a lot.

If you know what F@H(folding) is,i can tell you i gained 6-7% in performance, just by switching from 1600mhz>2133mhz rams.

Gigabyte z68x-ud4 and 2133mhz rams fits perfect.

And as scoob and sin suggested,a better gpu than amd hd6850.

Really, compiling code isn't a reason to get a 2600k over a 2500k - you'll likely notice NO difference. I'm a web developer so compile things quite a lot - until very recently on a fairly basic SINGLE CORE laptop. Ok, when my AMD 4200x2 was my (home) dev machine it was better, but really, even on fairly large projects compilation time was barely noticable. Ram is what counts most in my experience, my basic single core laptop was transformed as a development platform when I went from the rediculous 512mb it had when I got it to 1.5gb.

I've just been upgraded to a basic Dual Core laptop, running Windows XP Ooooo, and feel rather spoilt with that

I will defo go for increased mhz on the RAM. I do know what F@H is, I did a little bit on my PS3, never really had the patience with my rigs as I'm constantly restarting.

I understand that there won't be a massive improvement in the compile times, but when it comes to compiling multiple times, it is going to cut precious minutes/hours off over the day. I have to compile large chunks of code sometimes near the GB amount. Using a laptop for all this atm, and I have to say, it SUCKS!

I will up the graphics card and memory, which board would you suggest instead, or is the current one sufficient?

Thank you

I have been looking at the HAF X, it looks like a very neat and tidy case. £133 inc vat. I'll check for a review on here later. You know anything about this case?

Yes i have both cases, and i like the haf 932 a lot more than the haf x.

And if you want to install a thick rad like xspc rx360,there wont be clearence issues on the haf 932 to deal with.

Must admit I've always preferred the 932 to the X, and now that its got a black interior... I think it should come with the full windowed side panel as standard though.

Do you really need to compile the WHOLE project regularly? I mean, I create a project (or grab an existing one from Production), compile it the first time, and then subsequent compiles are automatic and only changed bits get updated. Guess it depends how your projects are set up etc. but compiling generally is a case of blink and you miss it (I exagerate, but you get me) as only a very small part is being re-compiled each time. I really think you'd not notice any real time saving over a day, but your work might be quite different to mine
smile.gif
If indeed to you HAVE to do multiple full compiles on huge projects then maybe you're right, however you need to understand how well your development tools take advantage of multiple threads.

Thing is, if compiling is so CPU intensive that it loads a physical core then HT isn't really gonna help. My understanding is that HT helps when there are multiple ligher threads, at the end of the day you still have the same number of physical cores and four is ample.

If you feel you need the extra threads then maybe waiting for a six (12 with HT) core Sandy Bridge-E would suite you better? They're not far off!

Board-wise, I like my ASUS P8Z68-V Pro - stable and easy to OC.

Hmm,

Well I just ran Prime 95 for a few minutes and the highest I saw was 90.33 W for my 2500k @ 4.6 - can that be right?

I cannot tell what the GPUs are pulling, is there any tool out there that might?

dude how can you dev on a laptop!!!!!! i have to have 2 screens minimum.... i need 2 thing open at once...

A dock and a big screen help but...

Ok lol that's BS, no it doesn't help, it's HORRIBLE!!!! Seriously, they switched us all to laptops some years back (well, it was in place when I started in this dept) as we're supposed to be mobile, visiting clients etc. It's good because I work from home a lot, but I connect it up to a decent monitor. It's really not great though, given my way I'd be plugged in to a 30" screen or two lol.

How I often manage is to "work" on my laptop but also have my own PC on for stuff...make it work, just about.

Gonna order some parts tomorrow. Could someone please list which hardware I should get? People are saying different things in this thread and @ IM

.

Which mobo, p67 or z68x-ud4 - and why?

i7 or i5

Which RAM (4GB min please)

Which PSU?

Which card (some people say Nvidia is better nowadays?)

What I have in my head now:

MOBO: P67 SABERTOOTH

CPU: i7 3.4 GHz

RAM: Kingston HyperX 2133 mhz

GRAPHICS: XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 XXX 1024MB GDDR5

PSU: corsair tx 650M

Case: 932 HAF

Anything that I should change?

Do I really need the i7? Would it be best in the long run?

Thank you...
