Fans stopped without me noticing

Tonight i was listening to music as normal on my Opty 146 @2.8ghz on 1.44V when my pc started looping the music i was listening to.

I let it do it a few times before getting up to reset my pc and then noticing all the fans in my case had stopped.

So i quickly turned my pc off and back on to check temps in the bios and at first the reported -124C (obviously to hot to record) so i turned my pc off again and back on and this time i got a cpu temp reporting of 74C

My fans were working fine though and the cpu started to cool back down to normal temps.

What could have caused my fans to go off and am I lucky to still have a working CPU ?

Sam

Can you be more specific on which fans stopped working and where were they connected to.

To be honest i believe it was a wrong temperature reading as i dont think chip can handle those temperatures at least not 120 Celcius :) Maybe something wrong with the probes who knows.

Well my fans have never stopped before and are working fine now.

This reporting was given in my bios so it couldnt have been wrong as they gradually came down rarther than a sudden drop.

All my fans are connected to the correct slots on my motherboard.

I think my psu failed for a split second which stopped my fans but to be honest i havent got a clue what it could have been as my psu has always been sold.

Well if it was your P.S.U i am sure you would of realise it while you are in windows as i am sure it would of effect the overall stability. I still think it was the probes or the motherboard , might be wrong tough.

Well whatever it was it wasnt good :(

Someone on another forum says when the bios reports -124C this means you have broke 100C  as it doesnt know what else to display.

your cpu would be dead if you hit over 100C, it wouldnt take time, it would just die

maybe u could survive a few mintues at 80C.....but 100C is toast

Hi mate

You need to give us a little more information like Tec had suggested. I hope your not running any large fans off your motherboard fan headers, as this is a sure fire way to kill your mobo...by drawing too much current through something that's not designed to take it. I have heard of peeps running 120mm fans of their headers and having the same problem, as soon as they were removed...no more problem. I'd suggest using 3 pin - 4 pin adapters and control the fans via a rheobus, or daisy chain them onto your PSU if you don't mind not having the functionality of controlling their speed.

I never trust temperature readings in my bios due to different manufacturers thermal diode placement...you only ever get an approximation

So you are telling me if your bios normally reports around 40C then the fans stop and it reports 75C and gradually goes back down when the fans come back on you wouldnt be a little bit concerned

No I'm not saying that at all, you're taking an extreme view of what I said

Sure your CPU is displaying hot due to your fan not being operational to cool it, but like you said "as the fan started again it rereturned to its normal temp." Were you running large fans off your fan headers, i.e 92mm or 120mm? And as Dave said "if your CPU had gotten to that temp it'd be toast"
