Fan Speed Problems

Hi all, I would consider myself relatively tech savvy but no expert, still learning. I have a coolermaster Hyper TX3 and I seem to be suffering overheating problems, I have reseated the heatsink (although still think the annoying quick pins as I like to call them might be broken), cleaned it, every trick in the book. I checked out my fan speed and my temperatures are perfectly stable and acceptable of 30C when idle with fan speed of about 700rpm then when I put on any games or anything my cpu temp can randomly spike which causes the pc to completely freeze up, the screen freezes and the sound loops so I have to manually turn off my computer. I checked my fan speeds and they do not increase as the load on my pc increases. I have a Gigabyte H55M-USB3 mobo and have tried adjusting fan speeds using Speedfan and the EasyTune6 software to which none have had any effect, in fact smart fan as it is called completely stops my fan and the "cpu fan fail" buzz is sounded. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks all.

if the push pins are broken then the heatsink wont be in proper contact with the cpu so the heat will spike whenever it comes away from the cpu. should be constantly high if that is happeneing though. any way you could post a picture on here of the push pins so we can see if there broken? also what cpu is it and what settings?

Hi, thanks for the response. I am pretty sure 3 of the push pins are fine but 1 of them is a bit loose but still holding quite flush to the cpu, it may have become loosened through much travelling to and from university. The cpu is an intel i3 540 @3.06Ghz (stock speed). The thing that is confusing me most is the heatsink fan speed. It is a coolermaster Hyper TX3, I have read through the specifications and everything and it runs between 800-2200rpm or there abouts. My fan has yet to even run at 800rpm. In the BIOS settings there is no way of controlling fan speed other than using "smart fan" which doesn't seem to be very effective. The fan is plugged into the mobo CPU_fan 4 pin socket.

Yep, tried it in the sys_fan header and still running at low RPM, which makes me wonder do you think the fan is at fault itself? It sometimes stops and looks as though it is being forced to go by the motor but can't quite get going so jolts a bit but then it will spin up. I wonder if the bearing on the fan has gone? p.s. thanks for helping, two minds are better than one.

try another fan in the cpu header and see if that spins slowly? if it doesnt then its the cpu fan in which case i would contact the retailer you got it from and get an RMA sorted out. glad to be of some help mate

Unfortunately I don't own another fan so will have to purchase another to complete this test but it will all be worth it in the end. I just ran prime95 and my pc confuses me under the torture test it reached 70C after a few minutes at which point I decided to stop, which isn't a great temperature but it could be a lot worse especially when the fan is only spinning at about what it claimed was 650rpm. I will have to do some more investigations, it isn't a killer problem my pc runs fine on ordinary things for example internet usage it is just when I run any sort of game especially total war it just seems to freeze completely with looping sound and no crash dump. Oh well cheers for the efforts

swap the rear case fan with the cooler fan.. its not pwm, but at least you should get 12v to verify header.
