Fan for i5-6600k

Since I am running quite ancient computer I am thinking about making my first PC build where I would actually put the components together. I am thinking about buying i5-6600k but the fact that it is missing CPU cooler is kinda scary to me since I have no experience with stuff like this.

I've looked into my local shop where I would be buying all of my components and "Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2" is the #1 best seller in this category. Would this fan be enough for this CPU? In the reviews I saw people saying that it is hard to install this fan and 1st time builders should avoid it. Does anyone here have some experience with it?

I would go for the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. Its cheap and does the job very well. Its not the easiest to install, but if you spend 10-15 minutes, you'll be fine.

I am afraid that I'll damage the CPU or motherboard while installing it not about the time spent on it. Thank you for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind and check if they have it next time I'll visit the shop. In the meantime I'll look up some review of this item.

Heyyo,

It's not that bad to install. Just follow the instructions and it'll come together just fine. :)

Main thing to keep in mind when building a PC is just to work on a surface that won't create static electricity (pretty much anything but carpet) and watch a few YouTube videos. It's also good practice to make sure to discharge any static electricity you have (touch the ground port on a power supply which is the middle prong or grab a door knob usually works good too).

If you've ever rebuilt a lawnmower carburetor? I'd consider that harder than building a PC. I did that after only watching one YouTube video. :p

I hope so, I have watched some videos about it and I think I can make it. However I am a bit worried about those CPU pins, I heard they are very very fragile. Other than that, I've changed few components here and there so I don't expect any trouble with that part.

Marc_92, thank you I'll keep this one in mind as well.

Thank you for the suggestion, however I did a quick price comparison and all models of this brand are priced in the range of 80 - 100 euro and more. It is way more than I am expecting to spend on a cooler in this build.

I am not necessarily looking for a cooler that have to be easy to install. What I actually want is something that can easily handle this CPU (even overclocked) and that is not fragile to install. I do not really care if I spend half an hour to install it.

What I do want is something that will not break if I apply slightly more pressure than I should or something that would not damage other components (especially CPU and motherboard). Ideally something that I can be sure it is correctly installed. Some click sound would be nice, tightened screws that won't break after slightly more pressure and so on.

I've checked the shop and created an list of coolers that they do sell and are around the mark of ~ 30 euro which is what I am expecting to pay for it.

TITAN CPU Cooler Intel/AMD Heatpipe PWM Z-Bearing

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO Rev.2

Akasa Intel/AMD multi-platform CPU Cooler AK-968
AKASA CPU Venom Pico (I+A)

SilentiumPC Spartan Pro he923
SilentiumPC Fera 2 HE12 24

Cooler Master CPU Cooler HYPER T4
Coolermaster Hyper TX3 EVO

Thermaltake Contac 21
Thermaltake Contac 30

SCYTHE SCTTM-1000I Tatsumi CPU Cooler Intel
SCYTHE SCKTN-3000I Katana 3 CPU Cooler Intel only
SCYTHE SCTTM-1000B Tatsumi CPU Cooler
SCYTHE SCKTN-4000 Katana 4

Zalman CNPS8X Optima 100mm fan PWM
Zalman CNPS10X OPTIMA 2011
Zalman CPU Cooler CNPS8000B
Zalman CNPS5X Performa 92mm fan PWM, 3x heatpipe

Does anyone have some experience with any of these? Can you recommend some of it? Or can you exclude some of it since it would be too weak?

How about the Scythe Kotetsu, it seems to have a good mounting system and has some favorable benchmarks and its around 35 euro?

Can you link those benchmarks, I would take a look at it. I am willing to pay for it 35 euro but who know what the price will be in the shop I am intending to buy it from. Or if they will even sell it.

Why not find a store that does sell what you want?

You should not be restricted on your choices (all of the ones you listed are pretty crap)

Don't expect any of those listed coolers to get you a decent OC. I doubt you'd be able temps at 1.1v with those coolers. If you want to really push a system, gonna have to fork out the money. Should also add 1.1v is actually on the lower side too, meaning your pretty limited in what you can do. If any of those coolers can somehow manage it, those fans would be spinning at max rpm and it will be rather loud.

@DarthDudo420 Thank you, the best part are those graphs showing it in perspective to other products.

@tinytomlogan Because it is a bit different depending on where you live. There are not that many choices to buy it from where I live. Not to mention that the store need to satisfy few conditions like it's reputation, location and so on.
I don't really expect to get 1st tier product for this price but if they are all that bad than I'll probably have to look for something else.

@realneil Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind.

@NeverBackDown Your answer made me even more confused, but thank you. I've actually never overclocked anything except maybe few years back some GPUs. Currently I am running everything at stock speeds. I wanted to start with this build in more or less 2 years from now since I expect that at stock it will be enough for my needs untill that point.

Your welcome man happy to help, I will say this I used the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, It was my first CPU cooler I ever bought, I overclocked an i5-2500k to 4.4ghz I cant remember voltage now but it was definitely more that 1.2 volts ,with no issues using it, most modern intel quad cores don't really get that warm unless you do extreme overclocking, I hope this does not confuse you more, try looking around the net for more benchmarks on what coolers are available to you and make a decision based on that, whatever you decide best of luck :)

You mentioned OC"ing the cpu so I figured you knew some details, but basically to summarize what I said more clearly, none of those will let you overclock the CPU much if at all. Going to need something with more cooling power. At stock speeds they will be more than enough.

@DarthDudo So if I understand that correctly I should be able to achieve similar overclock on i5-6600k with this setup right? Maybe even slightly higher since i5-2500k had 32nm manufacturing process with TPD of 95W which is slightly more than what i5-6600k have if I am not mistaking. It just runs cooler because it has 14nm. Thank you, I guess I'll have to think about it some more.

@NeverBackDown I know something about it but it's just very very high level overview. I'll have to dig through it a bit first but I expect that here on the forum I can find everything I'll need for that.
But should not that Arctic Cooler be enough if DarthDudo achieved that with i5-2500k and older version of one of those coolers without any problem? I guess that mean it was not very loud and kept it in acceptable temps.

I just wrote out a nice long reply to this but I lost it so I will give you the short version :p

I cant remember if it was the Freezer 7 Pro or the Freezer 13 I had used, I had a look for my receipts but I cant find them so I cant in good faith say which it was I had used and since there is a 25W TDP (115W/130W) difference that would make all the difference when overclocking, also there are never any guarantees, every CPU is different some are warmer than others, some require more volts for the same clock speeds some just wont reach 4.4 whatsoever so your mileage may vary :)
