F@H noob

A ) What is meant by 'folding'?

B ) How do I join Redline?

C ) What do I do to earn points?

I've read through a few pages of the F@H threads and seems like a fun thing, but as I've only been on these forums since december haven't really got a clear idea what it is

I wish I could help but I also have no idea what 'folding' is. Looks like a bunch of numbers on a screen judging from Tom's latest video.

It does seem to be all for a good cause as I also read a thread on it. Alzheimers is an issue very close to my heart as my mother suffered from that vile, disgusting disease. Quite possibly the worst disease known to man.

I think i'll leave it at that befoire I get myself worked up lol

What is protein folding?

Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

B)Simply download the appropriate clients and use team number 98860 when you configure them. GPU tracker is the easiest way to get started. Check our guides section in the F@H section.

C)Let the clients run to complete and turn in work units. Once they are turned in you will be credited points.

Any more questions, feel free to ask!

This is why we need a article ........... ahem

Hehe, a not so subtle nudge

Welcome to folding guys, pretty much do as blah suggested and if you have questions post them up here and we'll get you going.

B ) How do I join Redline? download the F@H software and fill in the Teams numbers,

C ) What do I do to earn points? Fold as much WU's as you can

Happy Folding !!

So it's not going to run in the background and sap the living daylights out my framerates, just a stress test for processors? And what do you mean by 'turn in work units'?

It is going to stress your CPU to the max, however if you are doing something else while folding, the other application has a higher priority and will there fore still get the processing power needed. I have mine running while gaming and there is not a big difference in fps.

You can turn it off if using the GPU Tracker or you can choose not to start it at all. The only problem you will have then is that the units are timed so you aim to complete them before the deadline to get your points for the team.

For example, I have a work unit running now WU 6061 - I need to get it finished in 2 days and 22 hours and 50 minutes to meet the deadline, each folded frame takes my pc about 6 minutes so if i leave it running it will be finished within 8 hours as I am already on 18% I will get my points and can start a new Work Unit = more points. At night my PC gets turned off as I do not fance sleeeping with ear plugs.

If I game the folding stops automatically as it is set to low priority, it even stops if i start itunes as it thinnks it is a game for some reason, so you need not worry about folding at home stealing processing power when you need it

it knows its place and never steps over the line.

Can i turn it off at any time?

Yep. GPU tracker has gaming profiles though that will pause folding when you launch a game. That's probably what I would do if I used the tracker.

With the normal client you need to ctrl+c to exit out. I leave the CPU folding away even when I game, but I always shut down the GPU clients.

Lol yet another question: points aside, what is the purpose of all this folding? from what i read on wikipedia am i right in understanding there is some remote organisation using your pc for research or something?

Yep, Stanford University. It's all in the Wiki SnW posted. More info here as well:

Here too:

This is what they have accomplished with their research:

this would be an ideal way to start using a virtual machine, in next month-ish i'll sort something out. then i can get it straight back to full stats when i turn vm off

VMs will work great with CPU/SMP, but not with the GPU client if you plan on running that too.

you can help, just download teh client and let your pc do the rest

A cure for alzheimers is a sure fire way to get your own back on that disgusting disease.
