I don't really care about power efficiency... and I think this deal for 780Ti is really good but what about being future proof?is 780 going to be dx12?
I'm not asking anyone to decide which one to buy, I'm just after your opinions.
Pete

No it (780) is not dx12, it is dx 11
I'd get a newer card over an older one every time, Moore's Law is already against ever buying anything, (this is a joke, so don't tell me that isn't what Moore's law says) why make is worse buy buying older tech?

I'm at a very similar situation right now.

I was looking through the non reference 980s but wasn't too impressed with the near £500 price point, so I took a look at the 970s for about £300 and nearly bought one. I just randomly took a look at the 780ti and saw them for £350. I know it's older tech but it's very similar performance to the 980 for 30% less of the price and a fair bit better than a 970 for only a little extra cash. Really struggling to make a decision here.

DX12 will not require a newer GPU... although you do require windows 8 to run DX12.

One of the surprise announcements at the show is that Nvidia will support DX12 on every Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell-class GPU. That means nearly every GTX 400, 500, and 600 series card will be supported. Interestingly, AMD isn’t necessarily following suit — the company has indicated that it will support DX12 on all GCN-based hardware, but hasn’t indicated if HD 6000 or HD 5000 cards will be included in that.
As for OS support, Microsoft was a bit dodgy on that front. Microsoft spokespeople noted that the company understands the questions around Windows 7 support, but offered no details on whether or not such support would be forthcoming. Instead, we got the following slides:
