Ethernet controller query

Hello,

I have a p9x79 PRO motherboard which has a 82579v gigabit Ethernet controller on it.

Does this mean I can plug in an Ethernet cable from it to the router and it will connect to the internet, or does it have to go through a switch or is it just for LAN use.

I am a noob when it comes to networking so can someone help me out?

The controller also does not have any drivers and I cant find any, anywhere! (I'm running windows 7 Ultimate)

I've tried intels generic driver install thing but it said I don't have any controllers on my computer.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks

Hi Mate,

It's an ethernet port so you can connect it direct to an ethernet port on your router. The router will be the device that connects to the internet, there aren't many routers on the market these days that don't have some number of copper connections on them.

I think what you're trying to get at is will the router tell the network connection on your pc all the relevant information it requires (Def Gateways,DNS, etc) yes generally they do unless you fiddle with them to try and get them to point somewhere else. It's all contained within the DHCP handshaking process.

As for the drivers, have you tried the Asus support pages, they are usually pretty good with driver support. If not I found it in the Intel ark here.
