E6600 overclocking problems

Hi

I've started with my noob skills to overclock my E6600 on a Gygabte P35 - DS3P with 2 1gb OCZ platinum XTC and a Fatal1ty cooler in a thermaltake kandalf case.

I've gotten to 2.970 ghz with a 9X multiplier and according to CpuZ a voltage of 1.44. My FSB is at 320.

But if i go above 320 it won;t boot and then my MB resets the settings back to FSB of 2.66. Standard in other words. Even if i up the voltage on my core it won't boot.

Any ideas as to what to do so i can get my cpu above the 3ghz??

thnx

What speed is your RAM rated at?

If it's PC2-6400 or greater then that shouldn't be the problem.

Might need to add a bit more voltage to the Northbridge!

p.s. what temperatures are you getting at 2.97GHz?

Could you find out the actual voltage that you have the CPU set to?

Software readings are nortoriously off. ;)

k, i have pc2-6400 ram and speedfan says that my cores go at max 49 degrees Celcius.

well, i dunno what my volts are because i set my MB to auto set volts for ram, etc. But i've tried running a 330fsb at 1.45 volts and it wouldn't boot.

but atm i'm at school but i can screw around with the volts and see when it stops booting when i put it on myself.

p.s.

what is the northbridge and what would they call it in the BIOS. Cause i haven't seen anything that say northbridge in the volt selection screen.

thnx

what is shown there is nothing like what i have. Mine can overclock itself depending on my cpu load etc.

And i'll check if i have teh latest bios and let you know :)

K, i just checked the Gigabyte site and i'm running the latest bios. And the settings provided in the link aren't even in my bios. Not in those words anyway. But i have my volts set to auto atm, but even if i up the volts for my cpu it still won't go above a fsb of 320.

The link explains the principles of overclocking.

Some things remain constant regardless of motherboard/bios - vcore, nb, fsb, fsb termination, 1:1 ram divider - these are the basics.

Have you read the article and tried to understand it? Your bios settings will be pretty similar in name.

You mentioned your cpu overclocks depending on workload. Sounds like you have intel speedstep turned on or some awful overclocking software. Have another read of the article mate, turn things off auto to manual, any auto overclocking - turn off.

p.s the northbridge is also known as Memory Contoller Hub (MCH) handles comms from cpu, ram, pcie.

As mentioned, make sure your RAM volts are upped to 2.0-2.1, may need up to 2.2 depending on how high your overclock gets. And check the divider, anything other than 1:1 and you probably have your memory overclocked too high. My memory is working great so long as I don't go past 805, now I have it backed down a bit so I'm not riding the redline and possible meltdown. (cpu @3.5GHz/RAM @2.1GHz is still good for me ;) )

My experience with the Northbridge (MCH) is that it doesn't need to go up, but I don't know the P35 chipset, maybe upping the MCH is necessary. 1.55 volts tops unless you know what you're doing (i.e. Frag or other high speed/low drag overclockers).

My advice for you... DON'T GET CRAZY. Don't hose your system, go slow, small increments. And make sure you have adequate cooling. Not all chips are created equal either...

what psu you got becouse maybe that might be the prob your bios saying one volt and you psu supplying another mybe its not up to the job?

Koganinja has a good point, James. May be that your psu is underpowered, maybe not...

It also helps us help you if we know the specs of your pc. Like Mr. Smith, Bungral and I show our specs, show us yours. (We will understand if you don't tear apart your pc trying to find out what brand of floppy drive you have installed.)
