DVD playback question

I recently built a HTPC and bought this slotload dvd drive to play movies, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA7GT2NX7527
I set the region and installed the drivers along with VLC player and it still will not recognize dvds. Any ideas what I should do?

have you tried installing codecs?

I know that it supposed to recognise them out of the box, but I have found that it somewhat unreliable at times, and installing a codec pack seems to fix it.

Before you install codec packs download a trial program like power dvd and see if that plays them if it wont play then then you need to check other things

I personally would go the codec pack route, as it being a HTPC, as the codecs will be needed anyway on the system.

Personally I use K-Lite Mega codec packs, as I have never found anything that doesn't play with these installed.

I have tried several codec packs, and still haven't got the thing to recognize DVDs. Also one thing that strikes me as weird, I can plug in my external optical drive, and it will play a movie. I am about to just scrap the slim drive, and buy another external unless some one knows anything I haven't tried yet.

just check all the connections from your drive and make sure everything is right so that includes putting a different sata cable too
