Dual channel mhz mixing?

Yo,

so right now im running corsair vengence pro 2x4gb 1600 cl9's, and I want to upgrade to 16gb as currently the way I use my PC i have on average 1gb free, it does feel noticable during certain things like having sheibe things open.

Anyway, I can get the same type and style vengence pro silvers 2x4gb kit but they are 1866 cl9.

My question is, in a dual channel board z87 g1 sniper, can I have 1866 running in dual channel config along with 1600? would I need to OC the 1600 to run 1866 to take better advantage of 1866 kit? if its impossible to run different speeds could I downclock 1866 to make it work? or if all fails could I abuse ram controller to auto reduce speed to lowest of dimms i.e. mix 1600 with 1886 and have controller automatically reduce speed and timings.

Your motherboard will automatically down clock the 1866 to match the lower 1600Mhz memory, it should still run in dual channel without issue. Overclocking your current 1600 ram to match the new 1866Mhz memory is also an option, just be sure that they are all running at the same frequency and timings to ensure stability. As for 1600 over 1866 I can't see it being a real noticeable difference.

Though it might be like that, I'll just OC 1600's although as you said it wouldn't make much difference.

thanks
