Dual Channel Memory

Hey, if you read my posts on the sandybridge price review you might know that I recently purchased the Mushkin Ridgeback which has also been reviewed on here, and I was wondering about running it as just dual channel rather than triple channel due to the new type of motherboards coming out being dual channel. I know that you can't tell how well it will perform on these new boards yet, but how well does this ram perform being dual channel on a P55 board (Stock and Overclocked) compared to the likes of the Kingston Hyper-X and the G.Skill Trident (both of which have been reviewed on here)?

You can just use a tripple kit for dual channel (if this is what you are asking ?!) i am using 2 tripple kits for 2x dual channel

I'm slightly confused here (sorry), so you can actually use triple channel memory on a dual channel motherboard and it will work just like triple channel memory would on a triple channel motherboard? if so how does that work out? and what I was saying originally was if the Ridgeback was used in dual channel format would it perform better (at stock or/and Overclocked) than the Kingston hyper-x and g.skill trident dual channel stuff ?

Memory itself isn't triple or dual channel. It matters how many sticks are used and on what chipset. You will never get triple channel on a P55. Calling a set of memory triple or dual channel, really only refers to the number of sticks in the set.

If you use 2 of the 3 sticks on a P55 setup, the memory will run in dual channel mode. If you run 1 stick, it will run single channel. If you put all 3 sticks in an X58 setup, it will run triple channel.

First i would say the Mushkin Ridgeback is the best memory out of those you mentioned so yes it performs better,

second i mean you can just use the tripple kit in a dual channel board and then it will just be dual channel NOT tripple channel...

Hope this clears it up for you

AFAIK, if you use all 3 sticks in a P55 or P67, it will drop down to single channel. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Ah ok

yes that has cleared things up for me thanks. Just one more thing however, the memory if I had all 3 slots of memory in it would then be 6GB of dual channel memory correct ?

You would see all 6GB, but I'm pretty sure it would operate in single channel mode.

This is what one guy said on a forum to do with running 3x2 on a dual channel motherboard:

"It will run in single channel mode. Period. There is no such thing as "triple channel memory" or "dual channel memory". There are Dual/triple channel kits, as in the sticks are tested for a certain voltage rating but that's about it really. If you don't run pairs of RAM in a Dual channel board, then it will run in single channel, as the channels are in the board, not the ram. Same effect with x58 boards, they can also run in dual or single channel depending on the configuration. So the only thing you really need to check is the voltage rating and that's it really. And even still, you can tweak it in the BIOS if need be. It is however optimal to have matched pairs."

So yes from this I think that if you ran 6GB it would run in single channel mode. However other people on forums have said 2 will run dual channel and 1 will in single channel.

Can someone actually tell me what's what!?

Also, any chance someone could give me a detailed answer to my first post?:

Calm down mate you can't expect people to instantly reply to all your questions!

As for the channels: I'm pretty sure they'll run in single channel mode mate, cuz ram runs at the speeds of the slowest stick in your config which in this case would be the one running in single channel? So they would all be running in single channel? Also if you'd have two sticks running in dual channel and one in single channel then effectively that would mean you'd have triple channel ram (2+1=3 ^^) so that isn't possible on a dual channel board, is it?

Then theres your memory.. I understand you've bought a triple channel kit and want to use it on a dual channel board? I'd say it's no problem but you'd simply use two sticks instead of 3. And your memory is fine mate, there's really no need to buy any other kit.

thanks a lot, and I apologise if I seem very impatient it's just that I want to get everything sorted as quickly as possible so I can send back the stuff if I need to. But thanks very much for giving me a great reply as I can now relax a bit more.
