does this hobby ever make you sick

Also. I hope no one thinks that saying I have spent a butt load of cash on my pc is me trying to come off as superior. Not at all. I wanted a proper pc since I was about 14. The first pc we had and I remember being interested in had I believe a amd athlon xp 2000+ with a Nvidia mx440 oem model with 128mb video memory din stead of 128. So pcs are a love of mine for a long time I asked for a 8800gt when they were out from Santa. The fat gimp got me a sit-up bench and some socks. So this uberkill build is my first ever build. I love it and loved doing it but looking back on 4k is mental you know what I mean. I could have got laser vision corrective surgery. I, going to continue building and it will prob continue to be excessively grunty machines but I will still think flip Darin that's a lot of cheddar. Maybe I'm just secretly a tightass LOL

You're along time dead, just enjoy.

If you really do want to avoid buyers remorse - Have your purchase in mind, don't buy it straight away though. If after 10 days its all you can think about, you still want it and can afford it - then go for it. That way you've given yourself a kind of cooling off period.

In some situations you need to think with your head and some with your gut, the key is knowing which one to go with...

I do see where you're coming from.

Personally I only get the 'sick' feeling when I have just ordered something without much research and it turns out to not be very good down the line, but then I get over it.

At the end of the day your hobby/hobbies should be what you want to spend your money on and instead the amount you pay in bills/fuel should make people feel sick.

My rig costs more than my car. I enjoy working on both, maybe more on the car, since there's more to do and I really enjoy welding. Then again my motorcycle cost more than both of them combined :D Money is meant to be spent, so the little spare money that I have, I spend on things that make me happy, doesn't matter how much it ends up being over time.

I avoid buyers remorse by ensuring I do a lot of research before i purchase any high involvement/cost product. In fact that's how I came across TTL and the OC3D community because I was about to build my first PC and I liked how in depth Tom's reviews were.

I'll be honest, I did at first, but then I realise.. what else would I spend it on?

I used to collect warhammer DONKEYS years ago as a kid but gave it up cuz it was too expensive, couple years ago an ex got me a voucher for £20.. I went in games workshop and dropped like £150 on it. I got into it deep again for a bit a year and bombed LOADS of cash on it, won painting comps, won a few other bits n pieces got to know the local (albiet older) warhammer nerds... Then about 7 months ago i took a step back and went.. Hang on wtf?! these cost WHAT?! and now I've completely stopped again :S

I have a really bad habit of finding something 'new' and chucking fricking loads of money at it, really enjoying it then moving on...

When I stopped with the warhammer I started up doing gaming again pretty deeply, I used to play competitively but then y'know, life took over cuz i'm not an idiot lol But yeah i got back into it and seriously needed a new rig. So.. i did what any other self respecting full-time employed person does. I didn't save a penny, went and got a credit card and bombed 3500 on a mega rig so I could get back into it..

Do I regret it..?

No :)

I say, so long as it doesn't financially cripple you, who cares? Happiness can't be measured in £'s or $'s if something makes you happy, enjoy it. Don't let the Mrs ruin your life by slapping you on the wrist either. I'm a self confessed shiney buyer I can't help it, but I'll be damned if you try to stop me. It's just part of who we are :)

TL : DR;

Nope, no guilt here, I spend enough on stuff, I earn the bloody money I'll spend it!

I laid my money out in front of me and waited for it to do something, It just laid there like wtf do something great O great money. nothing .....So I had to set it free it appearently wasn't happy with my company. oO
I like giving my money for shineys

Hey dudes. So as the title says. Have you ever made you sick upon realising how much you have spent etc. I did a rough calculation there and I missed out things like psu monitor keyboard mouse and other bits and bobs. So not including all those things my total for Flynn 2.0 is over

3200 POUNDS. EXCLUDING ALL THOSE ITEMS. I FEEL SICK. my sister is looking at me in disgust. If I was to tally up everything id say its about 4k.

i think i know were your comeing from mate i used to be very mad into rc helis and cars i wouldent like to say how much money ive put into that hobby and its the kind of hobby your aways paying out just to keep things runing at one point i had five cars and ten helis one of my helis cost my 2000 pounds and i dident even use it very much so i know were your comeing from but ive found at least with being into pc building modding and so on . your never without a computer as even if you dont have a lot of money you can build something usefull ive made more money fixing people,s computers then fixing someones rc heli or car i used to work in a model shop ill tell you its no fun at all

You saying that makes me think of my few hobbies. Cycling, running, snowboarding, skiing and computers/electronics. Sure computers are expensive, but there fun to build, do what ever with (including overclocking and gaming). but of the hobbies... i think cycling and running take the cake for me money wise. But sure there is just so much you can do with a computer or electronics in general.

so to answer your question in op/title... no it doesn't make me feel sick, i just know i can come home on a rainy day and enjoy a hobby which is computers.

I have bought some things blindly or on a whim and have had either buyers remorse.

Right now its more so being unemployed so I have to save up for things and can't just buy or upgrade when I want to so I have to spent a lot of time working out do I want or need these things.

If I had regular income I'm sure I'd be more into upgrading, but right now I'm pretty happy with what I've got together as I'm sure it'll last a few years.

Would you rather spend £5k on fancy clothes with other peoples name on it and stuff with fruit that lights up and will last you less than a year or spend it on something you will enjoy and will last you in excess of 5 years? :p

Also, you think the pc hobby is expensive. You should see how much car hobbyists spend...

And you can do more with a computer then say the people that spent many thousands on an army of warhammer

The amount I've spent doesn't make me sick because I've spent more on a car and used that less

What does make me sick about this hobby however is constantly being lied to by the companies we buy products from. How many times have you read a claim about some new part being x faster than y only to find out it actually isn't? Or how many times have you bought a part that just broke because it's cheaply made or designed wrong from the start?

That is what makes me sick about building all the lies in the industry. But apart from that I'm fine with it and I still love building my own computers.

all the best hobbies are bloody expensive... hunting, fishing, computers, even low cost rape gets expensive after a while, i mean after all the lawyer fees and what not, that once free hobby is now a small fortune.

Just about every hobby out there will have some expense involved, though it is very easy to spend a lot of money on computers. Part of that expense is generally recovered if you sell on the old parts, either individually or rebuilding loose parts into a system to sell.

At least that's what I tell myself when I spend a stack of money on parts :p

I am currently in the process of building a desktop and will be spending around $1500 USD and it does not phase me for a few reasons. One being that I currently do not have a desktop rig at my house. Two I have been working off laptops primarily for 4-5 years now and have dumped roughly 4-5k into laptops. The laptop I am on now is starting to get flaky due to heat issues. (Mac Book Pro 15" Late 2010) With the desktop I plan to build i can easily get 2 years out of it. Will more than likely be in the 3-4 range which puts me right around $500 a year instead of 1k a year. Three I really enjoy building rigs I have done quite a few for Friends/Family nothing extremely customized and I think its time I finally build myself one. I have currently bought a Corsair Power Supply and a Cougar Evolution case with and 5 fans for the case. Even though the case and fans were not the cheapest I liked the looks so I got them. :)

PC hobby is like a car hobby. It is an endless money pit. My first hardcore rig was a AMD 965 on a ASUS Crosshair formula III and 2 5770 in Xfire. That entire rig alone cost me around $1200.

I do have to admit though the one purchase that I still kick myself for getting was getting TWO 6990s and watercooling both. I spent $800 on each 6990 and another ~$300 on watercooling each one.

I think its about finding a balance on what you are actually going to use vs just having the extra power to have it. A little over head is a good thing but only ever using about 25% of your system unless purposely pushing it is not a good thing.

I will be using my future pc for work too so eventually it should pay for its self. Buying a 20TB server and only saving a few pictures on it would be a waste of money. :p

It's a hobby and it's for enjoyment, if you can't stomach spending the money, don't do it. Computer is a bit more productive hobby than say, I don't know, collecting overpriced clothing or getting drunk all the time with your extra cash.

I guarantee that this is a worthwhile hobby, it will actually SAVE you money if your smart (instead of buying a computer from HP or Dell that breaks yearly and has to be replaced, a home built can last long and can actually be upgraded).

Also, a computer has multiple uses like work, homework, and entertainment, while something like a paintball marker ($300-$1500) only have ONE use, shooting paintballs.
