I had a discussion with a friend who is a FLAC user and the benefits of being one. So that made me wonder how many other people are FLAC users.

I have a few albums in FLAC but I don't notice any difference between MP3 and FLAC tbh, I don't understand what these benefits are.

*wonders if being trolled as he has seen many people troll about FLAC before*

I personally view FLAC as a waste of space, since the investment to even notice the benefits is way to high.

That's mainly what I think, a FLAC album is up to 5 times as big as an album in MP3 and unless you are running a high end sound system you ain't gonna notice any difference at all.

The only situation where I would use FLAC was if someone gave me $500+ headphones, a $200 soundcard, a couple of 2TB hard drives and unlimited internet.

No-one would notice the difference between the 2, aslong as the mp3 is over something like cd quality sampled.

I use ALAC (Apples version of the same thing) and mp3 the scumbags for my portable players. It's not for everyone ALAC/FLAC cos, as you mention, it demands a whole lot of space. But in some cases you may want to reference a less compressed sampling of the original. (when I say 'you' I mean like the royal 'we')

If you like, you can view it as being as close as you can to the original, without having it ? If that makes any sense. Rip your original, lock it away and store the file on massive harddrives. Mp3 that to use for everyday portable use.

Nahh FLAC would be a waste of space for me. My sound system or headphones aren't good enough to benefit from this form of audio! Im better off sticking to 320kbps audio!

I had an excellent stereo I put in my car and a Cowon player. FLAC was the only way I could enjoy music on it. MP3 sounded horrible to my ears. The Cowon had a 30GB hard drive in it so it wasn't too big a deal. Now that I use my 16GB iPhone and have the stock sound system in my truck, I use MP3. As it is, my music takes up about 8-9GB of space on my phone. All of that encoded in FLAC would be about 45-50GB.

That's one of the things I like about ALAC, it's recognised by all things Apple, and is "lossless".

Horrible mp3s are usually low rated. Over something like 192/256 it's pretty indistinguishable as long as it's also unmolested.

I encoded everything back then in 256 from my CDs, with a few songs still left over from the Napster days in 128 (ewwwwwww) or 192. I could only tell in my car. When listening on my home stereo or computer I couldn't hear the difference.

I use FLAC, and MP3.

I couldn't really tell you the difference in quality through my headphones or my speakers.

However, for my favourite artists and albums, I always try to get FLAC, just because, in a few years it is inevitable that the quality of the average sound system set up will have improved, if you see what I mean? Hopefully, having FLAC will mean the music still sounds as good for longer.

That said, all my MP3 collection is 320Kbps, I suppose you could tell the difference between 128Kbps/192Kbps and FLAC, but yeah.

I have a lot of FLAC music considering I got an Asus Xonar Essence STX and a pair of Senneheiser HD 595, very soon to be exchanged to a HD 598. I know it's not a big upgrade.

It just looks so good and got a better cable and a bit better sound. I don't notice a big difference in quality, but for some reasons the lows are usually much better.

The 24hr battery life on a single charge is what got me. loving my cheap HD 215's now

If you can afford it, I would HIGHLY recommend the HD 595 or the HD 598 if you got a proper audio card. This is serious, the BEST thing I've bought to my PC is my Essence STX and my HD 595. Yes, they are not wireless, but they sound so good. They're PERFECT for gaming. Don't fall for that surround crap. It's just a gimmick. Almost like "HD Ready TV's" lol.
