hi

ive got a dfi sli-dr but its chipset fan is so noisy i want to replace the fan and heatsink

anyone know any that would work and fit under the graphics cards

cheers

SLI-DR is the worst possible board to try and make a heatsink mod for due to the crap positioning. Not a whole helluva lot you can do to make it quieter. If you want to make the stock heatsink just work 100x better take it off and lap it to a mirror finish and you'll see a huge temp drop according to Bourne.

yeah it is a stipid place to put it i have to admit that lol

does lapping it make that much difference ?

might give it a go then the fan wouldnt have to spin so fast

gave me a drop of about 5 to 6 C at full load and 10 C drop on idle by lapping it to a complete mirror finish. Really easy to do and takes bout 15 mins to do it. Nice flat base mirror finish.

you could take the fan off of the heatsink if it bothers you that much

assuming the fan is removeable?

cheers.

It would do but you could replace the fan with a low speed low noise one - this would most likely get in the way of the vid card tho :(

When you say "lapping it" , I assume this is just rubbing it with a cloth to get it nice and shiny?

Or even better you could use a dremel polishing tool to give it that shiny finish.

What do you think and would it be worth doing as i have the same board and aslong as the temps dont rise above 55C it is ok but during gaming it gets hot and as soon as it hits 55C its like a siren going off in world war 2.

not quite :p u need fine grinding paste and a sheet of glass or ceramic tile aslong as its perfectly flat it works quite well but under load it still gets above 55 with the same stupid little fan cos the 6800 vents on to it and dont forget to replace the square ring thing around the chipset or u risk chipping the chip
