Desk Design help

For my A-level Design and Technology project i will be making a gaming desk. My initial idea is to have the keyboard and mouse on seperate suraces (the one for the mouse slightly higher),they are on arms that have 180 degrees of movement and can be turn so there stored underneath the desk. Would you be able to provide measurements of your keybaord and mouse mats please??? And also how many monitors do you use ?

Also i'm hoping to have USB ports underneath the desk for the mouse and keyboard that is then connect to the computers USB ports to stop the wire problems. Good idea or not ?

Would it be a good idea to have a stand for headphones ? Storage for games ? Something that helps to keep all the cables tidy ??

I will apreciate any other comments or suggestions. Thank you, from a usless gamer

Just to give you an idea of the diversity of workstations that are available here are a couple of examples to inspire you.

and my personal favourite:-

I think multiscreen is the way to go....

As a gamer myself, and not much room on my desktop to be quite honest, would be nice to have some sort of hole to have mouse, and keyboard cables to pass through on the desktop, aswell as a retractable headset cable,as those are the things that make it look unsightly.

I think once moved to a new house,i may have a go at making my own too, much more rewarding, and you get everything you need from it that way.

Hope it goes well mate.

hi. gamers will want the keyboard on the same level as the mouse & room for a logitech G35 style board.

A USB integration is good for some accessories and I wouldn't use it foe mouse and keyboard because of lag and cable management could affect the mouse ease of use.

My keyboard is small enough so fits between the G35 and mouse and stays within reach. It's a Microsoft Sidewinder X6 without the NUM pad connected and measures 42cm left to right. For a bigger keyboard I'd like a optional shelf if I want to use the G35. There aren't many small boards and the best are too big for my desk and would need to be raised and only about 7cm's because I dont want the screen too high, leaving enough room for my mouse hand to creep under. I tried ROCCATS small board and it lacks fully back-lit keys so I passed on that and everthing else on it is excellent, superior to the Sidewinder X6 overall. The X6 with the NUM pad is too big and I have my arms out too far if it was between my mouse and G35.

I'm not a pc gamer myself as you guys have probably guessed, so i don't know anything about this subject. I thought the desk would be a interesting project to make and hopefully give to my brother when it's finished as present.

What wouldyou guys want from a desk ?

tbh you're going to have to get your feet wet, and come over to the dark side. You won't appreciate what characteristics a good workstation come gamer desk is until you've sat down and gamed yourself for a few hours at least.

You can read a book on swimming, but the only way you'll learn to swim is by jumping in...

I think some holes towards the back for cables to go through, such as monitors, speakers ect. I would want the keyboard and the mouse on the same surface. Also its a good idea for somewhere to store games, cds and movies, maybe like a vertical rack. I think its a very good idea to have a hook to hold a headset.

Good luck with your A levels.

What wouldyou guys want from a desk ?

1. ajustable mouse desk/stand thing, theres nothing worse than having you forarm resting on the edge of your desk during a long gaming session.

2. Concaved front like you would see on a corner desk but not a corner desk. (evanthough im a big fan of corner desks, its just not practical for evyone

3. Plent of depth to the desk, if you have a big monitor there is nothing worse than sitting to close to it.

4. No annoying bars going through the middle of the desk underneath stopping your legs going under

5. a cage/ poutch at the back of the desk to tidy away cables,

6. a built in surge protected power adapter hiden behind the cable shroud mentioned above so there is only one cable coming from your desk.

7. holes in desk to route cable, only small ones though just so you can fit a few USB connectors, if you have a wired keyboard/ mouse make the holes rubber gromited as well.

there is many more i could mention a good confortable desk is essential, take a look at the "Lian Li F1" very discrete but stylish gaming desk./

An integrated monitor stand. Something like this.

Dual-Monitor-Flex-Stand-Up-To-24IN-22LBS-MONITOR.jpg

But built onto the desk, like a pole that comes out of it. The amount of space used up by those awkward monitor stands is terrible.

The pole would also act as cable management, as both the monitor cables and the keyboard and mous cable could run through this.

But If you realy want something flashy. because it is A-level.

Why not build a desk that has a glass top. and have the PC inside of it. so you can look through your desk to see you PC compenents.

This should be interesting ... good look with this

Somethings i would look for being a gamer, is a large mouse pad area, my pad covers the keyboard and mouse and i like having the room to glide. Anothering thing which would be good would be a head phone stand, on the front or edge. Curved edges maybe ? Always a pain when you move arm backwards and end up with grazes down the arm :/. If i think of anything else ill post.
