Designing a Cube case

im quite liking clone's build log - its not quite wots on offer here but i like the general design of how the rad is mounted etc.

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=22019

wil the psu need to be mounted horizontally or something for it to draw air in?

The quality of his build is first rate. Colors are very nice contrast too.

As to PS usually I try to keep size as small as possible and turning the PS on its side makes the case very tall.

One thing I do is lay a reg PS flat with the fan facing up, than I cut a hole in the mobo tray and use the PS fan to cool the back of the mobo.(it draws air from all around the edges than exhausts it out the back of the PS.

One other thing (why I call all my SFF cases CrossFlow) especially "Now" since GPUs are getting so long the air needs to blow along the axis of the GPUs to be most efficient.

Tox, I can make the case 11" wide to fit the 10 1/2" cards. Are you thinking of air cooling the GPUs? or using the Rad?

My thought is the GPUs need the H20 more than the CPU.

Could you guys please list what Hardware you will be using, and what hardware you may upgrade to.

(as best you can)

Asus maximus formula x38

q6600 G0

8800gt

4gb reaperx

ocz gamextreme

2x320gb seagate 7200.10

black pioneer dvdrw

upgrade to nehalem

possibly some kinda of gx2 variant kinda thing

I will be using air for the GPU, money is my problem and I will be thruthful and say I simple cannot afford to pay for watercooled GPUs.

Specs:

Maximus Formula

Q6600

Geforce 9800GX2

620watt Coolermaster PSU

1 WD 320Gb harddisk

1 DVD drive

No upgrades need/cannot afford it. (Cars are so bloody expensive over here)

Air for the GPU could be sent down it with fans at either side of the computer? Shown with my very very crude paint picture. :D

Fans on either side, and GPU inbetween.

Crossflow did that? Damn I never noticed! :o

On a closer inspection on previous Markmods Tox realises his amazing idea has already been done and dubbed Crossflow. :)

well it had air being drawn across all the major parts then back out again at the back

well thats kinda what u meant innit? lol

Great minds think alike:worship:

In designing the cases from the first one elimination of the clutter and improving the airflow were the goals

by having the airflow "across" it is a very short run (like 10") for air to go than the heat is gone. Where in a normal case its around 18 to 20" and the air has to go up,over, around things to take the heat out.

Crossflow it is then! :D

Sam, are you agreed on sexy looking hardware on top shelf?

And boring stuff(HDD, DVD, PSU) on bottom?

affirmative ;)

psu, hdd, drives, etc on the bottom

wheres the rad going mate? :)

a nice window looking down on the hardware would be cool, then mesh on the two sides for a dust free air flow.

IF we have space put the rad on the bottom shelf.

Something like my little crude paint picture attached?

bringing air in yeh?

hmm might make the loop a bit difficult if u think about the turns needed in the tubing

but yeh something like that

Where`s a good place to get all kinds of tubing, not necessarily just for wc`ing ?

Like something for air ducting or something ?

Here is the Last version of crossflow (smaller but shows where parts go) Air is pulled through the rad and across the Hdds and PS and out the side (very efficient)

this is the second version of wiring, notice I have put 24 and 4 pin plugs for the wiring on the air box

This is a shot of it completely wired... Look no more clutter:wavey:

Here is a Hdd mount from the little red Crossflow (that Matt helped me write the article on here at OC3D) Because we will be using a triple rad standing up on its side there will be more room to use a full size DVD and more hdds (I kept my height to 3" but yours will be 5")

This is probably how I will mount the Hdds

Here in the states we have HomeDepot, Lowes and other home improvement stores. Also there is TapPlastics.com (I get some Plastic tubing, and CarbonFiber and supplies there)

I'm up for a Cube for ma new system.. has to be able to hold two loops on 240 or bigger rads tho.

Maybe something with a PVC (windowed) top/side depending on the mobo setup.

I dont know about the rest but 2x 5 1/4 bays external and 4x HDD bays internal would suit me.

Hello Nunzio, are you saying you want one of these cases? if so I may be able to work in 1 DVD and 4 Hdds or 2 Hdds and 2 DVDs but not sure on 2 DVDs and 4 Hdds.

Once I start laying the parts out I will be able to say for sure.

One thing thats very important is not cramming in too much hardware, as there needs to be room for proper airflow.

One other thing, do you guys want to use some sort of fan controller?
