Dedicated Folding Rig

I have been tossing around the idea of putting together a dedicated folding rig.

Today it came to my attention than 771 Dualcore Xeons are pretty cheap on ebay.

I have no experience with these. Will the motherboard be totally unable to overclock these cpus.

The idea being I can get the system up and running fairly cheaply and then expand out to two Quad cores at a later date.

This isn't set in stone just one of many ideas. So if it needs shooting down, go ahead. I'm open to ideas.

If you can find a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R with an i7-950 and oc it to 4.0-4.2ghz,6gb 1600mhz ram,and install it with ubuntu linux.Worth some 35k ppd.

Thats going to cost way more than I can out lay at the moment.

I know for sure I can get two 2.0ghx 771 Xeons for £30, motherboard +/- £70 and then a bit of Ram ontop of that.

Don't want to start a new thread,

but where the PIEP are those real BIGadv WU's ??

you know those that take at least 2/3 days ? and worth 300000 +- PPD...

Greetings Ray........

The points got adjusted, unless you mean the bigbeta ones that require 12 (or is it 16) threads.

OK, I am seriously considering the dual Xeon 771 setup.

Can anyone tell me if you have to use ECC ram in a 771 motherboard or if its optional.

I'm aiming for a board with atleast one 16x PCI-E slot (size) so GPU folding can be added at a later date.

I know this isn't going to be the fastest folding rig in the world, but for the price it's alright... Plus it has the 'Dual Xeon' cool factor

Edit:

Hmmm, I could get a fully working Dual 5130 Xeon machine deliverd for £150. So, soooooo tempted :s

Edit 2:

I have sent the guy (on ebay) an email. If I can get the price down a notch I'm going for it. Then later on I will drop dual quads in there

Bigbeta units as pickster said. They are still around, that's all I've been getting on my SR-2.

So, there is no shifting on the price...

To be fair £130 + £15 p&p is a fair price for a fully working dual xeon 2ghz workstation.

So, very tempted.

Then the 460 could go in there and I would have space for a 560 (Ti or not) in my main rig, once a decent deal rolls around.

hmmmmmm

Keep in mind you won't be able to overclock any Xeon setup (at least not very much) unless you go with the SR-2 and socket 1366 Xeons. With that said, if you get it for cheap enough then it's probably worth it, especially if you get an 8 core/16 thread setup that can keep running bigadv units.

It's just a 771 with Two dualcore xeons. In the future I will stick in two quadcores.

I have been looking at doing a cheap folding rig. It started with the fact I can get my hands on a 165 opteron for nothing.

Then I moved onto the idea of putting together a cheap 775 cpu/mobo combo.

However, I don't have any DD2 so I would have to buy that. Even cheap E6300 go for between £10 and £15, add the price of a half decent motherboard £50, then some DDR2 £20. All of a sudden a £130 fully working dual xeon workstation (hdd, dvd rom, 4gb ram) doesn't seem that expencive.

Edit:

If I can get a couple of the lower FSB xeons to drop in (which seems doable) I can always Pin Mod them for an overclock. But the ones that come with the workstation that I am looking at are already at 1333.
