Decisions...

Hi

I am planning my first PC build and a i am undecided what cpu to get...

I have narrowed it down to:

E8500 with Gtx 285

Q9400 with Gtx 285

i7 920 with Gtx 260

The pc will be used for gaming and i was wondering how long each cpu could be used for gaming for before it became obsolete.

Thanks

Matt

Filp a three faced coin, which ever wins, get that.

Tbh, for a 24/7 rig any of them will do nicely, each having pros and cons that mean you could sit there debating it for days.

That said, personally I'd go for the E8500 option, simply cos I likes high clocks...

Indeed, the i7 would mainly be better for benchmarks, for gaming go for a nice dual core :). They still outperform quad.

i7. Your main question was how long before it goes obsolete, so there's your answer. i7 has a fresh release, it will last until Intel brings out a new socket (knowing intel, maybe 3 weeks!...I jest)

Q3 2009. Lynnfield.

As for the structure, it uses LGA1160 (updated to LGA1156 later) socket, while Core i7 used LGA1366.

Soure: expreview

Shiny new socket - although i7 is 'enthusiast' which i5 will be mainstream.

I digress.

I would go for the i7.

And the debating begins.

I would go for the Quad tbh.

Why? Because if devs of games are using Dual Core they will eventually go to quad core development and then i7.

Don't understand?

xD

I've seen that a couple of times this week.

I've been more of the opinion that they "will do the same job when ur gaming".

On the dual, 1 core will be ignored by the game. Whilst on the quad 3 cores will usually be ignored :p

Ok , I am now a bit confused....

If i told you what else the system would have would that help?

E8500 & Q9400

4gb ddr2 800 ram (crucial ballistix tracers)

Asus p5n-t Deluxe 780i mobo

True 120 + arctic silver 5

750w Zalman modular psu

Gtx 285

640gb western digital hdd

NZXT tempest

And....

i7 920

Asus p6T deluxe

6gb triple channel corsair dominators

750w corsair psu

gtx 260 eventually but 8600gts to start with

Stock intel cooler

NZXT Tempest

500gb samsung hdd

Thanks

Matt

Just for ur gaming interests, the biggest component from ur choices is gonna be the gfxcard.

Seeing as u got no real preference between i7 and 775, imo, u would be better served to buy: (from the choices)

GTX285

4g Ram

Q9400

Intel P45 or X48 775 socket mobo

Having dumped most of the cash on the gfxcard.

There will be no game that will struggle with it, almost all games u will be able to slap all the settings to their max without thinking about it and enjoy the experience. Those few u can't can probably be counted on one hand, and have to only decrease after effects.

So as to ur last post, I'd take the 1st example as an immediate purchase. Changing the 780i for perhaps a P45/X48 mobo. If ur willing to w8, I'd chose the 2nd, use the 8600 GTS until u can afford a GTX280++ and a 3rd party cpu cooler. P6T possibly being an expensive option out of all the i7 mobos out atm.

Ok,change of plan again

Can someone recommend me a good motherboard and some 4gb ram to go with it please? Max about 150 - 200 pounds.

Would like it to be good to overclock on as i will get a true 120 and either an E8500 or Q9400

I will also get a 4870x2 so if it is crossfire that would be good...

Thanks for all the help

Matt

One of Asus's P5Q lineup.

P5Q Deluxe if you want to spend the money on it :D

And for the RAM, some nice Corsair DHX 1066Mhz sticks:

Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 Dominator Memory Kit CL5(5-5-5-15)

Should come out to about your budget for those parts.

Ok,

Change of plan, AGAIN!

Here is what i have changed too....

E8600

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P

4gb corsair 1066 Dominator ram

TRUE 120 extreme black edition with s-flex fan

640gb western digital hard drive

750w corsair power supply

gtx 285

Antec 900 / NZXT Tempest

How does that look?

Any thing i should change?

Any opinions on the motherboard?

Thanks

Matt

Gigabyte boards are usually about as good as the Asus ones :)

(I just like the Asus ones cause they have a black PCB).

That looks like a solid build, and there's nothing I can see that needs changing.

Dan

Complete change of plan, have counted the pennies and found i can afford an i7 rig, with a bit of a squeeze....

I have chosen all parts except motherboard, which is better:

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5

or

EVGA X58 3X SLI

or

Asus p6t deluxe v2

or

Any others you sugGest close to the price of the ones above...

Thanks

Matt

Asus p6t deluxe v2 all the way son, have u read the custompc reveiws??? :p

Ah its a shame ur goin i7, and E8400 would have done the job nicely, with biostar t-power i45 being able to handle +600 fsb.. :p is a great match for gaming, u could get a 1GB 4870 which would be better bangs per buck than the 285.. then again im just basing this on my rig/upgrades :p

I am going i7 because it will mean it will last longer, and so when i eventually want to upgrade i wont have to buy all new parts again for a new socket....

Will look at the reviews when i get home

Thanks

Matt

Ok, have finally decide on components:

i7 920

true 120 1366 socket

asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard

patriot viper ddr3 6gb 12800 ram

640gb western digital caviar black hdd

NZXT tempest case

8600gt (for now, will be upgraded as soon as possible)

750W pc power and cooling psu

How does that look?

Will be ordereing today or tomorrow if there are no problems with it

Thanks

Matt

I'd say that looks like a very nice system. Add a 4870(x2) or gtx280 when you have the money and you should have a very very nice rig :)
