is it really worth going skylake or just upgrade to z97, gpu +ram? also going for new case, i cant decide whether to go skylake but some good pointers will be taken into careful consideration lol so please chime in if you please, any questions feel free to ask

What we need to know, is what do you use your rig for mainly? And also budget?

mainly gaming and watching hd movies so not really that much , i had a gpu ages ago but it died on me so finally getting round to gathering the pennies up to upgrade some stuff, budget is probably going to be £200-300 maybe more, i know its not much but its a start lol

If you're mainly gaming then you kinda need a gpu, no? :)

Depending on the kind of games you play it might even be viable to go with a high end gpu + dual channel ram, and keep your i3...

If it were me - I'd put the money towards a GPU instead of a socket change.

was sorta leaning towards getting a gpu and upgrading ram to 8gb/16gb, though im looking to change the motherboard and case aswell, i have the define s but the front looks really bare as i dont have any custom loop or anything in there so looking something that is slightly smaller inside of case

lol :p yes, i havent played anything in a long time, gpu died ages ago and lost interest, but now im back on par and wanting to upgrade some stuff

Why would you change out the motherboard? Is it faulty?

That seems like a waste of cash to me. I would just throw in an I5 and a decent GPU. Oh yeah, and upgrade the memory too.

I agree with Alx here if you are not going to need the Z97 features upgrading your motherboard would be a waste of money IMO just focus on your CPU, GPU and ram to start with :). Also going from Haswell to Skylake isn't really that viable as its just a minor performance increase.

GPU, Memory, Storage, PSU, CPU, Motherboard, Case would be my order of priorities for this build. You would quickly and unnecessarily blow your budget away changing CPU, motherboard and case when really they are your nicest components. A new GPU would obviously let you play games at decent settings, memory would be beneficial for that and all tasks too, you really need 8GB and after that improving and adding to your drives would probably bring the most significant real world benefits for gaming and daily use.

Assuming you want to play modern AAA's at 1080p i'd spend nearly the whole budget on a nice 390 (Twin Frozr V) or 970 (SC ACX2.0) and then get the absolute cheapest nice black 2x4GB DDR3 kit out there.

yeah im gnna get gpu and ram out of the way 1st, motherboard isnt faulty just wanted to try and get a motherboard thats more subtle as trying to find colours to go with my current motherboard is hard lol, i was thinking of going r9 380 at most but havent tryed team green before not sure what team green are like for gpu, im going to take good advice and work on the gpu and ram first then build everything else round that, as i really want to get back to playing games, only have a few in steam account but would be nice to play them again :D ps might even do a project log for you all lol
