ddr2 800mhz vs. ddr2 1066mhz ???

what fsb are you running at?

if you are keeping the fsb the same and keeping the same divider as previously, you wont see any difference..

have you watch a news lately economy in America is BAD. People loosing house, loosing jobs, State loosing funds. Bottom line its the best time to buy something :)

I do on-line gaming WOW

I would rather wait for 5870 to come out and this will reduce 4890 dramatically...

ah if its only wow, you might see an improvement in an 8800 then, never played wow so duno what it plays like on the 7xxx series cards

I was introduced to computer 3 yrs. ago and I remember the guy saying all I need is 256mb ram in video card its more than enough, which I end up getting a 6800gt that was then when the 7 series was the Mother of all card and Pentium 4 3.20ghz was still a decent cpu. Then disaster came, high definition movies will not play in my new supposed to be a very darn good p.c. (What the heck??? I want my porn in CRYSTAL CLEAR!!!). Well, its so apparent that I have a new rig... I learned my lesson, maybe getting a quad core now may not be a good choice but in a future it will become a low class cpu that can still definitely run all the application or maybe another format of video that is more superior to 1080p.... Think out of the box :)

i have to agree with i hunta about upgrading your gpu first, it will bring a bigger performance boost than upgrading your cpu to anything else.

If WOW is the biggest culprit, I built 2 identical E6850/4gig/8600GTS systems... 3/4 years ago ? play it 1680x1050 all maxed out with no performance drop, to this day. What benefit a 8800GT would have to either of these, I'm not sure.

Its not because WOW is the only game I want to play. Of course I do want to play crisis but with the current card i have its pretty much not worht playing it. Like I said Im waiting on 5870 and the new operating system which will offer much superior graphics and saying all this will get me back on original post question which is the ram...

Ok assuming I have a quad core with a 5870 gpu is it going to make a difference if I change my 800mhz ram to a 1066mhz ram w/ a 1:1 ratio (a quad core w/ a 1:1 ratio w/ a 1066mhz is a one heck of a overclock)....

Yes mate with that spec, you will see a bit of an increase, when running my XMS2 at 800mhz I saw about a 5fps increase when OCing it to 1066mhz, but that was also with a slight CPU clock increase...

If you have to spend money to do it now, I wouldnt bother with your current spec, just Oc your 800mhz ram...

The price of 1066ram is only £10 or so more, so I'd go for it if it was a choice between 800 and 1066, however I wouldnt upgrade from 800.... Like they said, start elsewhere..

The discussion so far is very interesting, but there's one thing I would like to clarify...

Q9550 has a FSB frequency of 1333MHz. That is Quad Pumped. Means 333MHz in real life. 1:1 divider for DDR2 memory with a 333MHz FSB, means DDR2 667MHz. Very far away from your 1066MHz target.

To reach your 1066MHz DDR2 target, you take 1066, divided by 2 (because the "D" stands for Double), and you get 533MHz real life FSB. This means that the Quad Pumped value of the processor's FSB will be ~2133MHz. This will give your little quad core an operating frequency of ~4.53GHz (because the multiplier of your quad is 8.5, I think...). That is a lot for a Q9550, even if your using WC.
