If I were to install Cyanogen Mod (which has just gone general release 10.1 yay) Does it also then install all your apps from the play store like it does when you setup your phone and what-not ?

Really want to try this, but don't want to lose all my stuff.

Also does anyone know how to make like an image backup of you android device so if you don't like it, you can just put it back exactly how it was?

Cheers lads

You generally install a GAPP package (basically a bundle of google apps normal or black inverted) and this will get you the google apps on a custom rom.

The other apps should be automatically redownloaded once you log into your account from the play store however anything where the data isnt saved on your SD will not be kept over so you will lose a fair amount of data if its not either stored on your google account or SD card

Hope thats helps (custom romming it for 5 years now never use included android lol)

best way to back up your phone is with CWM(clockworkmod) or TWRP(team win recover project), this will back up your system.img, boot.img and data.img for you to recover exactly back the way it was.

If you got your CM from get.cm then you will need to flash gapps to get market ect.

not sure what phone you have or if s-off has been achieved if not then you will need to get ADB (android development bridge) to use fastboot to flash your boot.img (i'll contains ramdisk and kernel) though there maybe a one click tool to do it for you.

Not sure about the app auto-install because I always back up my app data with TitaniumBackup and restore it after I've installed a new rom but I think that if you checked the Back up my data in settings then it should.
As for a system backup you can do one from the recovery screen (CWM/TWRP) or you can use something like Online Nandroid Backup.

from what read on Google its got internal storage which will act as an SD card so should be fine.

@op give this thread a good read over at XDA. (sorry for pointing people away form this forum, but XDA is more focused on android development)

0 bloatware, underclocking/undervolting for more battery (overclocking if you wish :p), more customizable (quick toggles, different dpi per app, tablet mode or a mixture between tablet and phone mode if you want), more updates. There are more reasons but these are the reasons why I rooted my phone.

custom kernel: as said overclock/underclock of CPU/GPU/memory, overvolt/undervolt, tweak memory management, better CPU governor, I/O control, LED control.

Root access: ad blocking, themes, increase security.

Very tempted to do it myself but needed some good reason in order to follow it through.

I misunderstood the Google Play store bit though.

Can you install Apps from there with as much ease as normal?

if you get a custom ROM for your phone based on cm then they will likely bundle gapps (google apps) with the rom however, if you install right from get cm then you will have to flash gapps after.

google apps includes apps to add your google account, play store ect.

Yeah once you installed a rom and flashed Gapps goes exactly as normal then except if choose your rom right you can 2x the performance and smoothness out of your phone

ROM can help for performance but a custom kernel will do much more.

take the one x that i have HTC stock kernel was shocking and full of errors took devs a good while just it fix it.
