Custom Case/Paint

Hi,

For my next build, I want to use the Fractal R3 in White however, I want the inside to be matt black.

Without having to buy one white and one black case, which is the best way to go....?

When Tom created the Bengal rig for example, anyone know if the rig was sprayed using rattle cans... or even how to achieve the matt black finish?

The outer of the rig I'm thinking of covering in White carbon effect vinyl... some may say just buy the black case then. Still undecided on the carbon so would rather buy white.

Also, anyone know the best way to cut a window into the R3, or a compnay that could do it/supply the side panel cut?

Cheers,

Martin

Not really thought this through have you.......

a: buy a black one cover in vinyl.

b: vinyl covering isnt that easy and a 100% promise you it will look terrible, far to many grills corners and joins for it not to end up looking like a Blue Peter project coveredin sticky back plastic.

Long and short of it is.......... Id think again.

drill all the rivets out and get it powdercoated

thats not a very cheap solution.

if u can't afford powder coating it and u want to diy to get the satisfaction then buy a black primer and a quality black matt quality spray. preferrably same branded

Just buy the white one and forget about the vinyl. The vinyl wrap is a fad, you will most likley tire if it quickly. You can do a good job of painting the interior if you take your time, prep everything properly and use quality spray paint. If you are not comfortable with a spray can take the time to practice and get it right before you paint the case.

Youll spend more money doing it yourself PROPERLY than you will getting it coated, but even then putting powder over powder can be a receipy for dissaster

I'd just use a spraycan. Dont give a monkie about it as long as it stays in place :I

Edit:

Cover the outside with some paper and tape. Then go banana with the can

I agree, I have been painting a case and got a quote of $70 to sandblast and powder coat the entire case. I decided to try and do it myself and have easily spent that in paint, primer, sandpaper, paint stripper, bondo, masks, gloves wirebrushes, tape etc etc etc.

A black one covered in white vinyl would probably be the most obvious choice, but as you say, there are so many grills to cover it would be a nightmare. So if only the main facias were covered on a white one, the vinyl could be left off the grills... surely it would be that noticeable...

Anyway, I'll post up some pics or maybe a video if I decide to give it a go. Thanks for all the comments.

welcome to the forum,

uhh yeah, white vinyl over black is crap.. it looks gray. and it you have louvers, vents or

complicated curves the vinyl can lift and present a unplanned look. look into a vinyl adhesive

for those areas. rattle cans can only do so much, until it chips or gets scratched (which is

easy to do) 30-40 in paint supplies. powder coat is a tougher surface, but consistancy is

an issue for a low-dollar quote. two-tone case is difficult in the long term, especially if you

are a constant upgrader because of wear and tear on the finish.

good luck with the build and coating..
