creating a lan,help needed

well i bought a usb lan adapter fo my old rig as it hasnt got one and i installed the software and set it all up on both pc's correctly(ime pretty sure i did)

in the connections bit it shows up on boths pc's and is connected but when i try to transfer the files and settings from my old pc it says it cant detect the new pc

any help is muchos apreciated

I was going to ask whether you were using a swich/hub or just straight through, but you did say you were using a LAN adaptor. There are two basic cables. A straight through cable, which is used to connect to a hub or switch, and a cross-over cable used to operate in a peer-to-peer fashion without a hub/switch

well i am using an adapter like this on my old pchttp://www.oninocomputing.co.uk/network_adapter/d_link_dub_e100_dub_e100

and a Belkin Cat5e Network Patch Cable 3m - Grey (CB-002-BE) link to cable

and the cable is plugged into the onboard lan of the new pc.

Can you give us more details on tcp/ip configurations for both lan adapters properties. Also check whether you can access the other pc by its ip number and not dns name as it could be dns not resolving.
