Corsair Obsidian 350D

Hi guys,

This is my first build in many years, so looking for reassurance I haven't screwed up too much and what looks good to me isn't a complete disaster for OC.

I've build my build around the Gigabyte G1. Sniper M5 mATX motherboard, and with the reference Nvidia Geforce GTX 780 card in mind. So with those two in mind, I went green!
I custom sprayed the Corsair AF120/140 fan ring green to match, and so far I'm liking them a lot.

I have done a fair amount of research watching pretty much all of Toms vids and reviews, before parting with my hard earned pounds. But I'm open to suggestions on what you would have done differently, or how I may improve on the build in the future.

So the key piece of kit missing in the build so far, and I will post some new pics when it arrives, is the reference GTX 780 card. I am also waiting on some Bitfenix Alchemy braided cable extensions - green naturally!

So here's the specs:

Corsair Obsidian 350D (windowed)
Corsair CX600M PSU
NZXT LED string (green)
Gigabyte G1.Sniper M5 m/b
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 12GB
Corsair H110 w/c
Corsair AF120 Quiet Edition (x1) - custom spray rings
Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition (x2) - custom spray rings
WD Caviar Black h/d 1TB (x2)

I can't wait for the green braided cabling and the GTX 780 reference cooler to arrive and then, finally the Green Machine will be complete!

And get an Nvidia graphics card that has the light up 'GEFORCE GTX' logo and it'd be near enough perfect...

...well, minus the 3 RAM sticks and some of the wiring

Cheers. The 24 pin was too tight to bend round into that slot. But I am getting some of those Bitfenix Alchemy green extension to slot on the end and will then, yes go through that slot.

What's wrong with the RAM sticks? Just aesthetically you mean, or actually the sticks themselves? (I salvaged them from my old rig, so they are the older component).

Agreed, once I get my green cable extensions, it will all be tidied up more.

Well there's 3 of them, so you're forcing the CPU to run it in single channel mode.
If they're older, what voltage are they?

You may be better off replacing them with something newer.

Ooo this case is fantastic. Deserve Obsidian class.
After Obsidian 650D I like this model most of all.
I really suffer without CORSAIR on our market.
That's because our people didn't used on respect and
CORSAIR search reliable market for official partners and retailers must respect customers.
You can't destroy someone name if you behave bad against customers and our retailers apparently can't answer on CORSAIR demands.

Yeah that would be fine too.

They should be fine - I'd just be concerned they may be 1.65v which isn't great on Haswell.

Also - no SSD?!

I'm not confident in memory to be honest, so let me know whether this setup as it currently is, is ok?
It's a 12GB triple channel DDR3 kit, 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.50V.

If I run all three sticks in this config on this board, does it not run at triple channel?

Oh darn! Sorry man, very good point. It's an Intel i7 4770K.

Still trying to get my head around RAM setup. So I've a triple channel kit, but my board only supports dual channel. Anyone know if that's right? Would pulling a 4GB stick out be better?

I am no expert on the subject. But if what James has said is true then yes. Using only sticks will be better than the 3.

I think boards that support triple channel RAM have either 3 or 6 slots whereas those with 2 or 4 only support dual. Make sure you keep the DIMMs in the same coloured slot, if they are different colours, or check the MB manual, or the 2 remaining sticks will still run in single channel mode.

Really liking the green scheme and the case is awesome. Clean lines all the way!

Lovely looking setup. And yeah my understanding of it is also either your board will run in dual channel with the same coloured slots (2 or 4 sticks) filled or single otherwise
best option - take out middle stick because 8GB is plenty + symmetry + dual channel

From what I've read, I can occupy slot 1 + 2 + 3 and still benefit from dual channel with 12GB (3x 4GB sticks).

Here's a few more pics. I've added some BitFenix braided cable extensions and sprayed them to match.
Still saving for that GTX780 with glowing green badge!

Looks amazing man! Loving the work on the colour rings on the fans! I think you could still work on the USB cables.. But apart from that, looking great.. the only thing is.. in the darkness the "GEFORCE" on the card will be bleached out by the green LEDs on those strips, yes I'm mirroring what TTL says but it's true, I have GTX 580 Matrix's and I used to have red LED strips and I replaced them for white LEDs and it made the red Matrix logos pop a lot better.. ofc it's up to you but that's my advice as I said though, great work so far

Looks much better, but that front I/O and Sata cables could be hidden better.
The colours look really good now though.

Except for the lighting, which is a different shade of green. Besides, coloured lighting will only wash out the other colours (especially when it's dark) so might I suggest white caselights?

Other than those two points, this build is really cool

so now I have seen this done a few times now. How do you paint the corsair fan rings green? I am currently getting together a green theme machine and I really like the look of the green rings just wondering what the best way is.
