Controlling PC remotely over LAN without VM eg Thunderbolt?

My gaming PC is in my living room connected to a projector which is horrible for gaming (input lag) but its used 75% of the time for watching videos/movies.

For gaming I have built a second PC in another room (from bits lying around), and plugged it into a monitor, then used steam stream to run games over LAN from my main pc. This works really well however there must be an easier (cleaner) way of doing this. I looked at thunderbolt docks but it would mean running another cable all the way through the house, possible but im extremely reluctant to do so.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I would go about this with minimal lag on I/O's.

Basically I want to remotely access my main PC over LAN, without a second pc.

Slightly confused why you use a gaming machine to watch videos/movies but use a second machine to stream to play games. Why not just swap the machines?

Or put Teamviewer on both PCs and control them both from your smartphone.

Ideally I only want 1 one PC, with a mouse, kb in the living room on the projector and another mouse and kb in a bedroom with a monitor. Thunderbolt dock would allow for this however I would prefer to use the LAN rather than running another cable.

Seems insane to me. Move your 980 machine to where you monitor is and stream the movies to the projector. You could even use something like a Chromecast or some Plex compatible device.

Do you have a smart bluray player or something in the lounge?

I have my gaming pc in my spare room and I stream movies over the LAN to my Bluray Player in the lounge and PS3 in the bedroom via PLEX (or you could go direct to a Smart TV)

I'd swap them over and keep your gaming PC in the room you want to game on. You don't need a 980 to playback video content. Remote access your library on your gaming pc from the lounge room spare parts rig.

dismantle both, put your best stuff into one aka the gaming pc and put it in your room. Put the leftovers into the second pc and make it your HTPC.

could just get a steam link to cast steam to any tv. i dont know how it is for latency tho. a friend has one and says it's not bad.

@Garih, you sir, have just solved my problem with Steam Link, I was reading a few reviews on it and latency only really becomes an issue if you use it over WIFI, which I wont be doing.

1 PC, separate peripherals in each room, over existing LAN.

I wasn't even aware that this existed, Its basically a thunderbolt dock for LAN.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I thought i was going to end up having a HTPC and a gaming PC as Warchild had suggested, would have worked perfectly but the steam link is the perfect solution.

Steam Link uses the existing LAN
