I am reading a lot about conroe thus far this is what I have found:
1) It's blisteringly fast in non-multithreaded applications - due to using the full 4MB cache and having a smaller instruction pipeline than previous P4's.
2) Low power and low temps with no apparent sign of cold bug.
3) Rumours are rife though that in multithreaded applications performance is slower than x64 dual core, mainly due to the fact that the FSB is a bottleneck and that the 4MB cache is spread evenly then acrosss both cores.
4) The extreme edition will have a higher FSB which will in fact put it neck and neck with FX60 in multithread applications.
5) Normal Conroes willl hold a commanding lead in older 3d (3dmark 05, 01 and 03) so all of last years games will run faster on Conroe, but new ones with multithread enabled will be faster on an x2.
6) Extreme Edition chips with the higher FSB will be better than skt939 FX60 in most things.
7) There are some rumours about 64bit compatability issues, but just rumours AFAIK
So becuase it runs cooler and uses less power and no apparent cold bug, the Conroe will be the enthusiasts weapon of choice as the potential for 4ghz to be a normal overclock on these is more than possible and will probably be the average.
The AMD 65nm part for AMD needs to be here this year for AMD to compete, it's unlikely to be until Feb07 when we actually see it and tech details on this are thin on the ground.
I suspect the 1st generation will be a DIE shrink, meaning what? Well probable nothing more than higher clocks, maybe more cache lower power and heat output, cold bugged perhaps?
We will only know how well Conroe perfroms when we see head to head reviews - but if in fact the gap in realworld mutlithreaded applications is not as big as everyone hopes then a 65NM AMD part might just be enough for 2007 (although quad core is just around the corner then).
It's really exciting now, becuase we should be seeing performance from AMD/Intel and ATI/Nvidia, it's been a while and the choice of platform will not be one sided (three years of A64 domination) which should be better for the comsumer - Bring on the PRICE WARS!!!
