Conflict with another IP address

Hello guys!

Yet another time, while browsing the web my net connection stopped working. At the same time windows displayed message saying, that there is a conflict with another IP in the network, or something along the lines of that. It already happened to me a few times (although quite rarely). I was wondering, what can it be possibly caused by? Is it possible that someone might have connected to my network without me knowing?

We need a bit more detail bud.

1) What network are you connecting to? (aka private home network, work network)
2) If it is your own network how many devices are connected to it?
3) what OS are you using?

It's a private home network. There are usually up to 4 devices connected, althoguh for most of the time its just 2 or 3. Today when I got the message about IP conflict only one pc was up and running
I am still using ol' good xp 32 bit.

Only one PC was connected right as opposed to just not turned on?
Honestly XP is pretty insecure so it could be something on your PC...

As above, first step to do is to reboot router when you get this message as it is a conflict within the IP tables on the DHCP the router has.

This usually happens when your connection drops and reconnects without the router realising it, and until the lease on the IP address ends it will think that it is connected, hence the reboot fixing it.
