Computer turns off

hi everyone, i just replaced my amd 3500+ with a amd x2 3800+ processor, before the upgrade everything was fine and it was going well, but now, when im gaming or opening 3dmark06, my computer sometimes just turns off.

it has happened twice now.

when installing the heatsink, it wasn't going on properly before, so i was pushing a bit hard on the cpu, you think its broken? games play perfect when it doesnt turn off. im scared, i checked the PSU cable and it is securly in place. Quick responses would be amazing!

thanks guys!

You sure your power supply can handle it? Systems tend to Shut down/Restart when they lack power.

Edit: Gah, beaten by doomie lol.

i was hoping that my antec 550watt trupower 2 could handle this ATLEAST, i wanted this thing to handle my soon coming 8800, but i guess not..

That PSU shud be fine for your current setup (unless it's got a problem). As others have said, have you tried the dual core fix?

Also, when you say it turns off - does it switch of completely or restart?

the usual culprits:

Lack OF Power.

Overheating(i assume u used the correct quantity of thermal paste and a new HS/F).

Memory errors (run memtest 86).

MISC hardware failure (remove all your pci/addins that are non essential and run ur machine -- this is also a great way to check for power deficiencies ).

it just turns off, i ran orthos for 2 hours and she ran fine with no errors, i have installed the dual core optimizer thing from AMD

the PSU should be fine, the CPU and heatsink are the only things i have changed, and the idle temp is 40/41 and 50/54 for each core

Temps are fine, your PSU is more than fine (someone I know w/3800+ X2 & 7950GX2 uses it).

Does it only reboot in 3D06? What portion of 3DMark 2006? CPU tests, or a random spot?

You can try a few things like running dual SuperPi 32m, 3DMark 2005, etc. Good luck to you.

It did it when first loading up COH and then 3dmark06,

i have tried CSS/COH/R6/3dmark06/05 and its fun fine. and superpi 1m, ill try some Test drive, and then dual super pi, oh and orthos ran fine for around 2 hours, then i just shut it off

The temps are wholey fine for the cpu, but are u oc`ing it ? Cos if u`r not yet, they seem very slightly high for normal/stock on load. It may be worth trying to re-seat the cpu anyway, cos as u say - it`s the only constant that`s changed.

Another point, unless u do the AMD/patch/drivers in a correct fashion-order, u will get restarting quite alot - even after hours of good behavior. This can also happen if u`r trying to use the previous install of windows u had b4 the cpu switch. I had it and it`s very frustrating. Everything is fine for hours .. lull u into a false sense of security .. then everything appears to shutdown out of the blue, and it starts up again.

I`d personally keep the psu ideal as a last resort - unless u gpt a spare u can switch out for it.

the only spare i have has less power, antec 480watt true blue or somthing

i really dont want to reseat the heatsink, cuz it was a b1tch to get on, the side near the psu i barely got on.thing is, when i was instaling the cpu heatsink, i was pushing pretty hard on it, you think i could have somehow ruined a core, or the cpu itself?

oh and it is not overclocked with all my fans on low, with my OCd 3500+, i was getting idle 38 and load 48

I`m running 2 3800x2 pcs with 400w psus here, one with a 6600gt the other a 7600gt, soundcard in the one both with nics, all ram slots full, 3 hard drives on one and 4 on the other - dvdrw opticals each, 480 should be fine.

It`s hard to remember what they were at stock, but 50 something on load does figure high to me. I know the one clocked @ 2350 ran into the 50s on a stock cooler. (they`re both nicely ninja`d now and the system restrains the clocking more than the temps, 40 something is a bad day)

U can try running memtest from a boot source. Even tho it`s designed to run through u`r memory, it does push the processor a bit. If the system survives 2 passes or more, I`d immediately look at it being OS based, meaning software not necessarily hardware.

I reseated the heatsink, but now nothing shows up on my mointer when i turn on my computer.

whats goin on?

The CPU will not cause this. My guess is that you've disturbed the graphics card in the process.
