Computer failing to boot without any beeps..

.. or anything.

(Apologies this isn't a new build as such, so point me in the direction of another forum if this is the wrong place)

So I moved my computer in a car for xmas and it's been a bit temperamental ever since. It begins to power up, the fans start, but after a few seconds it clicks off, no beeps, and then starts to power up again.

I stripped it down, took all the cards and cpu out then put it back together and it worked. Then, this evening, it happened again. This time I just gave the cooler a bit of a jiggle and it started up again.

I'm rather not have to resort to jiggling the cooler about to get my computer to work though. :(

It is a
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H
16gb
3770k
Firepro v7900
bequiet pure power 530
stormtrooper case
Noctua d14

thanks in advance

When you say you jiggle the cooler about, it does sound as though you have a poor CPU connection, did you inspect the socket to see if there is any movement in it?

Is the CPU securely firmly seated in the socket.
Make sure there is no dust or stray paste in or around the socket.
Are all your connections firmly secure (fans, 24Pin, 4 or 8pin CPU).

Hey, thanks for getting back to me.
I unplugged everything and replugged it all. I took the cooler off and took the cpu out. I cleaned off the old paste put some new paste on and replaced it. I didn't notice anything to make me think there was a bad connection before or after.

I didn't really check for excess dust, but I didn't really notice any in particular.

I suspect some damage might have been caused buy moving the rig with the d14 intact. (It being rather heavy). I don't mind buying new parts, but I need to identify which parts to buy. Would the fact that the motherboard isn't beeping suggest that it is the motherboard itself that has the fault?

its possible that the cpu contact/pins have been damaged or could just be a loose cpu fan connection, without litrally being sat infront of your pc and taking the motherboard out to inspect it cant give a definitive answer. but as you say you have to "jiggle" the cooler to get it working sounds like its a loose connection to me or damaged cpu contact i.e bent pins.

Hey thanks,

I'm wondering if, because there are no beeps at all, that indicates a problem with the motherboard itself? The Gigabyte website seems to suggest that a cpu error would be indicated by 6 short beeps. Or is it possible that somehow the cpu problem could cause the diagnostic beeps to fail too?

1.AWARD BIOS 1short beep :System normal 2 short beep :CMOS Error 1 long beep and 1 short beep:Memory error 1 long beep and 2 short beep:Graphic card error 1 long beep and 3 short beep :AGP error 1 long beep and 9 short beep :Memory Error Continuous long beep :Memory not correctly installed Continuous short beep :Power supply unit failed 2.AMI BIOS 1 short beep :Memory Error 2 short beep:Memory parity check error. 3 short beep :basic memory 64K address check error 4 short beep :Real Time Clock malfunction . 5 short beep :CPU error 6 short beep:Keyboard error 7 short beep :CPU interruption error 8 short beep:Graphic card error 9 short beep :Memory error 10 short beep :CMOS error 11 short beep :CPU cache memory malfunction

It doesn't look like that motherboard has a beeper on it, have you got one attached to it as that could explain the lack of beeps?

Oh, well that would explain the lack of beeps. But, I'm sure I've heard it beep before. What makes you think the motherboard doesn't have a beeper?

not every mobo has a sounder. i have stripped pcs before that had them soldered in but on any that i have built there has been no sounder built in but a module supplied separate

but, I'm almost certain I've heard it beep before and I've seen other threads online discussing the beep codes of my model of motheroard. Do you have a particular reason to think that my model of motherboard; GA-Z77-D3H, doesn't beep?

Does sound to me like you may have inadvertantly damaged the CPU Socket where it meets the Motherboard somehow, while transporting with the d14 attached. It would explain why it only works when you jiggle the cooler.

I've had a look over the picture of the board on the Gigabyte website and can't see one. They are usually a smallish black cylinder with a hole in the centre.

have you tried taking the motherboard out of the case and booting it up? (a good place to put it would be on the motherboard box).
